Obituary For Sondra Downing

On January 5, 1960, Sondra Veta Downing was born to proud and loving parents, Jean B. Downing and Carl L. Downing, in Sydenham Hospital in Harlem, NY.

In 1970, Sondra's mother passed away so her aunt, her mother’s only sister Judy Shell raised Sondra from 10 years old and became a second mother to her. Judy guided Sondra to be the virtuous woman she came to be. After graduating from Canarsie High School, Sondra became a mother baring her first born child, a son, Kevin Lyron Nickens on December 5, 1978. Her love for her first born child Kevin then inspired her to build a foundation for her son. A few years later she married her childhood friend Theodore (Teddy) Nelson.

On June 6, 1985, Sondra and Theodore gave birth to her second child, a beautiful baby girl who she named Nicole Siobhan Nelson. After being married for several years she divorced Theodore Nelson due to irreconcilable differences. Several years of finding herself and re-establishing her foundation for herself and her two children, she began working at New York Law School. After work she would attend Van Wyck Bowling Alley where she played on a team and participated in tournaments. There she met and fell head over heels deeply in love with her current husband, Charles Peterson Hall. December 2016 they made it official and got married. Charles had three children to whom Sondra became a step mother. Her step children included Matthew H. Hall, Mark A. Hall, Nya Hinton and their families. In October 2017, the happily newlywed couple and family relocated to Dallas, NC.

Sondra was loved by many, she was a well-respected and caring lady. She loved to make jokes and keep her heart filled with laughter. She had a million dollar smile. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, baking designer cakes and interior decorating. But, most of all, at the top of the list, she loved taking care of her husband and catering to his every need. That was not a task for her, it was an honor and she enjoyed taking care of him. Although Sondra was battling Cancer, it didn’t stop her from fighting and striving for a cure. She would research everything dealing with her situation. She was a trooper. She did not let anything get her down. She continued to travel with her husband and their bowling team to various states. Sondra and Charles also took several trips to places such as Jamaica, Los Angeles. They have also taken several cruises.

Sondra left to mourn her husband (Charles P. Hall), son (Kevin L. Nickens) daughter (Nicole S. Nelson), granddaughter (Nyshia Nickens), Aunt (Judy Shell) who was her motherly figure, brother (Michael Downing), and sister (Gina Medina). Sisters-in-law (Sheree Hall Deal, Yolanda Hall Miller) Brothers-in-law (Phillip Hall, Larry Deal & Antonio Miller) She also has a large family of aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins, in-laws and friends.
