She leaves to cherish her memories: her five sons, Glen Butler (Yvette), Randall Butler (Dianne), Semmie Butler, Jr. (Gayle), Bobby Butler, and Mason Butler; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Marie Mason Butler was born January 28, 1928, to Isaiah Mason and Annie Starks Mason. She grew up in Jefferson County Mississippi, where she lived on a farm with her parents, three brothers, and two sisters. Marie attended high school in Natchez, Mississippi, and later became a teacher’s assistant/sub-teacher at Roxie Elementary School before starting her own family.

For 54 years, Marie was married to Simmie Butler, Sr.. They became the proud parents of five sons, Glen Dale, Sr., Randall, Simmie, Jr., Bobby, and Mason Butler. Marie kept her boys in-line by being attentive, motherly, and using one of her many willow tree switches to assist her in keeping them on top of their Ps and Qs. The family lived on her parent’s farm until they moved to a home in Roxie, Mississippi. There she had a large garden where she grew her own food, cooked it, and fed her family. Besides being a gardener, she was her sons’ first teacher. Each one could read, write, and do arithmetic before ever entering school for the first time, and most important, Marie made sure her sons attended church regularly on Sundays.

Marie and her family eventually left Mississippi and moved to Bloomfield, Kentucky, and later to Louisville, Kentucky. She found work as an assistant cook (chef) at Joe Z’s Italian Restaurant & Pizza. She was also a clerk/cashier at the local Key Market food store for many years. Later, she studied at H & R Block where she was a tax preparer for two years while still tending to family and being the home office manager/bookkeeper for her husband, Simmie, and their family run business, Butler and Sons Electric. Although Marie worked outside the home for a while, she was still a good wife and mother to her five boys.

Once those sons of hers were grown, she attended Bellarmine University part-time to become a better writer of poems because outside her family, her next true passion was writing poetry. Marie wrote many poems over the years and some of them were about her own life experiences Marie Mason Butler lived a full life that has come to an end in this world. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Willie Mason, Isaiah Mason, Col. Dorsey Marshall, Annie Mae Odell, and Jessie Mahaffey. On Monday, March 15, 2021, Marie Mason Butler departed this life. .
