OBITUARY PERCY WINGO, JR.

Percy Wingo, Jr. was born in Marion (Ocala) County, FL on July 28, 1928 to the parents of Mr. & Mrs. Percy (Christine) Wingo, Sr. He was the third oldest of 9 siblings born to this union. He was predeceased by his parents, 3 children ~ Alfonso, Shepherd and D’Ann and 2 grands ~ Samourian and Jennifer. 5 brothers ~ Ellis (Red), Alfred (Bud), Fate (FT), Eugene (Gene) and Dempsey (Flat Tie).

Mr. Percy, or Wang as he was affectionately called, begin driving 18 wheelers at age 12. He was blessed to drive for 76 years. This accomplishment would make him a Master Driver. During his lifetime he would drive over a million miles across the United States and Canada. Driving was what he was called to do. Nobody could handle a big rig like Wang. He could back one up, do a U-Turn or park in the tightest space with ease. He was the absolute BEST. His recall of trips, people and places was amazing. His memory was as sharp as a tack. He would spend hours sharing his experiences on the road. His final run was at the age of 88. His CB handle was Flat Foot Sam. He was just as passionate about eating possums, coon and gopher as he was driving. Let us not forget his undying love for a good pound cake made from scratch. He knew how it was supposed to taste and wouldn’t eat it if it wasn’t to his liking. He LOVED sweets. PERIOD! He made no apologies for it and his wife knew to keep them in the house.

Percy answered the Master’s call on March 20, 2021. Left to cherish precious memories is his loving and devoted wife Mrs. Shirley Wingo, whom he remarried. Children: Percy O. (Jackie) Wingo, North Carolina, Ernestine Wingo-Moore, Texas, JoAnn Hutchinson, Gainesville, FL, Min. A. Faye Wingo, Tampa, FL and Avis Wingo-Belt (John), Georgia. Step-Children: Sonja “Fefe” (Tommy) Campbell, Ft. Lauderdale, Tara (John) Drayton, Vent Drayton and Victor (Caletha) Drayton, all of Winter Haven, FL. Teressa “Chubby” (Larry) McKinnon, Miami, FL, 25 grands, 78 great grands and 44 great great grands. Siblings: Lois Wingo-Henry, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Rufus Wingo, Ocala FL and Laura (Robert) Williams, Lynwood, CA. Goddaughters: Ashaquay Davis, Tampa, FL and Former Assistant Chief of Police, St Petersburg, A. Lois Worlds. Friends for Life: Lev Wells, Freddie Lundy, Robert L. Box and Michael T. Box. Thank you for your support and encouragement down through the years. Thank you to a special nephew, Dempsey Wingo, Jr. for always being there. To Dr. Richard Campbell and Staff, Lake Placid, FL and Dr. Wayne J.
