Gregory Kendall Simmons, Sr. was born on August 29, 1962 in Fort Pierce, FL to the late Margaret Simmons and Clyde Mitchell. He attended elementary and middle school here in St. Lucie County. He attended both Fort Pierce Central and Fort Pierce Westwood from 1977-1980. He graduated from Fort Pierce Westwood High School in 1980. While in high school he received a scholarship to attend Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware. He became one of several freshman to start on the University’s varsity football team. He played the entire season. After school the school year ended, he returned home to Fort Pierce to find a summer job because there were no more summer jobs in Delaware. Later, Greg moved to Panama City where he lived for several years. After returning back to Fort Pierce, he began working for the State of Florida with Department of Juvenile Justice where he remained for 27 years. Ten of those twenty-seven years were spent working at DeSoto County Juvenile Correctional Facility under the Direction of Superintendent Carter, where he became supervisor of the Bravo Unit. In August 2011, he returned once again to Fort Pierce and went back to work at the St. Lucie Regional Detention Center under the administration of Superintendent Didiylia Finlayson where he remained until his death.

Together, they have a family of four; Natoyia Atmore of Fort Pierce, FL, Gregory Simmons, Jr. of Fort Pierce, FL, Ernest Morgan (Chris) of Lakeland, FL, and Andrea Morgan of Orlando, FL. Greg had a passion for sports. Anyone that knew him knows that he LOVES the University of Miami. “It’s all about the U”. He loved teaching kids the game of football. Being a coach and a mentor was one way he strived to keep kids out of trouble and prevent them from entering the justice system. He also really loved people. Greg was constantly smiling, having fun and making people laugh.

Greg you really hurt us with this one man. I had no idea that when you were passing my home a month ago, and stopped and asked " how was mom and I doing" as you did for many years, would be the last conversation we would share on earth together. You were a true definition of a man, a father, a great co-worker at DJJ, but most of all a true friend indeed. Honey you will be greatly missed by your wife, your family, your DJJ family, and the many friends you made along the way, and most of all the hundreds of boys and girls you encountered at their lowest level being confined. You mentored those kids and showed them the way and for all your great deeds GREG I promise you they will not go unnoticed. Say hi to the rest of our DJJ buddies. Slim, Mr. Durden, and my girl Erica (us army)... Thanks for all the laughs on the job my friend. Rest in power! Ms. Renea D Thomas Ft. Pierce, Fla

My deepest condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of working side by side with Mr. Simmons at DJJ in DeSoto. He was always there to help me and provide guidance in any situation. I was able to coach his son in football and that when it showed what kind of family man Mr. Simmons was and what his family meant to him. He will be truely missed. We will keep everyone in our prayers. Matthew and Christina McCray
