Derwin was a proud graduate of Hillside High School class of 1979. After graduation, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Central University, quickly beginning a prominent 25-year career with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. Derwin started his career at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Butner, NC and went on to serve at FCI Petersburg (Hopewell, Virginia), FCI Fort Dix (Fort Dix, New Jersey), Metropolitan Correctional Center (Chicago, Illinois) and finally returning back to FCI Butner retiring in 2006. After retirement, his passion for learning and reading led him to further his studies, obtaining his Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Strayer University (RTP) and his Doctor of Business Administration from Walden University, completing his Doctoral Degree in 2014.
A public viewing will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm and Friday, April 2, 2021 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am in the chapel of American Cremation & Funeral Service.
A private funeral service will be held Friday, April 2, 2021 at 12:00 pm. You may join via Zoom.
