Obituary For Ernest Strickland Sr

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Ernest R.Strickland Sr. will be held Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at 11 AM at Goolsby Mortuary. Ernest was the second of seven children born to the late Rev. James Monroe and Exie Phillips Strickland in Jesup, Georgia on January 17th, 1942. Ernest's father was an ordained minister of the Methodist Church under the old Central Jurisdiction. Ernest's siblings preceding him in death were Hamilton Lincoln Strickland, Melvin LaVolle Strickland and Kenneth Lakes. Ernest was raised and nurtured in a Christian home. He grew up in Hogansville, Georgia, graduating from the West End High School in 1960. Upon graduating, Ernest moved to Atlanta and was gainfully employed at the General Motors Assembly Plant, where he retired after more than 30 years of employment. Ernest married Harriette Simon and to their union, they were blessed with three sons: Christopher Michael (Ursula), Marc Anthony (ShaRonda), and Ernest Richard (Jacquelin). Ernest's beloved Harriette, a devoted wife, and mother, passed in 1991. Ernest was always the life of any party. Fishing was his greatest passion. He was also a huge fan of football and golf, especially if Tiger Woods was playing. Ernest would have at least 2 to 3 TVs tuned into these sports programs in his bedroom. Lovingly, cherishing Ernest's memory are sisters: Leila (Roy) Boykin, and Ellen Hood; brothers: Lorenzo (Janie), and Fred L. Strickland; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends:

Daddy was truly a person with no filter. Things I wasn't able to learn from my biological father, he taught me. Words weren't always gentle but they were meaningful. He was a dancing machine. He would dance an entire event.I love him and he will be missed.

Ernest and his brothers and sisters have always been my favorite cousins. We grew up together as neighbors in Hogansville. Although he was older, he was always a great cousin. He will be truly missed by the Sewell and Phillips cousins. Our prayers are with the Strickland family. Linda Sewell Thornton
