Obituary For Elder Russell Redd

On Friday, April 16, 2021, God in His Infinite wisdom saw fit to call from labor to reward the soul of Elder Russell Redd. Born in Henry County, Virginia on September 25, 1930, the son of the late James Redd and the late Martha Goins Dillard Redd.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Hairston Redd; eight sisters, Lillian Wright, Louise Redd, Doylas Dillard, Mattie Hines, Ethel Singleton, Agnes Hairston, Gertie Waller, and Novella Dodson; one brother, Everett Dillard; step-sister, Sarah Valentine; and step-brother, Joe Redd.

He was educated in the Henry County School System, and retired from Bassett Superior Lines after many years of service. He also was employed by the Henry County Public School System as the night custodian for over thirty years. He later started his own logging business in which he operated for many years.

Elder Redd was Pastor of the Rock Run Primitive Baptist Church, the Chestnut Knob Primitive Baptist Church, and the Oak Level Primitive Baptist Church. He was Moderator of the Chestnut Knob Primitive Baptist Church Association.

Elder Redd leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Arleen France Redd of the home; three daughters, Blenda Minor of Woodbridge, VA, Martha Redd of Martinsville, VA, and Karen Turner of Bassett, VA; one son, Wayne Redd of Martinsville, VA; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; one sister, Mary Jane Via of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Meadow Christian Church Cemetery, 1140 Meadowood Trail, Martinsville, VA. A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
