Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. EST, Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Uchee Chapel A.M.E. Church, Seale, AL. Visitation is Friday, April 30, 2021 from 12 - 5 p.m. EST according to Taylor Funeral Home, Inc.
Our beloved, Mary was born in Coffeeville, AL on November 1, 1928 to the late Earl Hytower and the late Pairlee Smith Hytower. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rev. Willie L. Harris, Sr., stepfather, Will Hall, The Wolfpack: her brother, Willie J. Hightower, I; sisters, Rosie Lee Hytower Robinson and Louise Hytower Watkins.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Union Baptist Church in Coffeeville, AL and was an advocate of God and wrote poems and talked about him all the time.
She was a substitute teacher, foster grandparent, volunteer, poet, author and illustrator; but her greatest works were as a Sunday/Church school teacher, Mother of the church, past Missionary Society president and chairperson of the Senior Citizen Day program at Uchee Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Mary graduated from college with highest honors and was a member of Gamma Beta Phi, Phi Theta Kappa, Russell County Education Retirees Association (RCERA), Alabama Education Retirees Association (AERA) and Gallops Senior Center.
She leaves to mourn her passing a son, Willie L. Harris, Jr., Montgomery, AL; two daughters, Ernestine (David) Hill, Oakland, CA and Joyce A. Harris-Stokes; two special sons, Lamar (Marquita) Harris and Vernon Stokes, Columbus, GA; a stepdaughter, Ida Mead, Columbus, GA and a goddaughter, Virginia A. Richardson, Montgomery, AL; grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Steward, Wanda (Sanford) Livingston, Mister (Tenia) Cormier, Sharon (Orlando) Green, Starlett Harris and TaWanda Harris; god grandchildren, Takeithia (Kyler) Sanks and LaToria Jackson; 22 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; special church friends in Christ, Linda Groome, Marion Jones, Queen Allen, Brenda Allen, Alberta Walton, cCurch school and Missionary Society families.
