Obituary For James A. "Hoss" Hairston, Sr.

James A. Hairston was born out of the union of his parents Lem Hairston and Virgie Hairston who are both deceased. James was affectionately known as Hoss to all his family and friends.

He was the fifth child of a total of nine brothers and sisters. Clyde Hairston (North Carolina-deceased), Billie Ann Mixon (Philadelphia, PA-deceased), Henry T. Hairston (Philadelphia, PA), Louise Waddle (North Carolina-deceased), Leon Hairston (Martinsville, VA), Lucy White (New York City, NY), Esaw Hairston (Martinsville, VA), and John R. Hairston (Roswell, GA).

He was a student at Albert Harris High School in Martinsville, VA. Hoss migrated to New York city in the early 1950's and married Mary A. Hairston on December 22, 1962.

Their union produced a daughter Roberta Hairston, a son James Hairston, Jr. and a step-son, Edward Sanders; one grandson, Daryl K. Stevenson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He retired from Manhattan Saving Bank in the late 1990's. Hoss loved baseball and his beloved New York Yankees, and also, he was an avid bowler. He loved playing Bid whist. He loved and was loved by his family and was always in attendance at the annual James, Martin, Hairston Reunions wherever they were located across the United States. Hoss was know for his quick wit and gregarious laughter.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Elder Alan Preston, Eulogist. Burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, Martinsville, VA. A public viewing will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
