Vera Britton Owens, daughter of the late Dora Britton Robinson and George Black, was born February11, 1923 in the Summerton section of Clarendon County. Those loving arms awaiting her in glory are her beloved husband, Thomas Owens, a son, Ulysses Owens (Poss), mother and father, her sisters, Edna Mae Black (Anna Lee), Tisha Mae Andrews and Leemell Wilson Smith(Ann), brothers, Vander (Elo) and George and her grandchildren, Devon Trotman and Lloyd Haynes and son-in-law, Warren Wheeler.
Her passion in life was to help others and she did that soon after she settled in New York City by working as a house cleaner, Home Attendant and, eventually, a Nurse’s Assistant at Isabella Nursing Home. During her life, she became a community organizer by helping disadvantaged and low income women. After retiring from nursing, she volunteered for the low income elderly with the Senior Companion Program until 2015. Her integrity, humility honesty, reliability, and intelligence brought her the highest recommendations. As a result of her volunteer services, she received honors and awards from President Barack Obama, and many awards from the USA Freedom Corp, for appreciation and commitment. Vera strengthened our nation and made a difference through volunteer services.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great, great grandmother and an amazingly caring person. We will miss her.
Vera Britton Owens departed this life on May21, 2021 at7:00 PM in Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, due to natural causes.
She leaves to cherish her memory and love nine children: Tommy Owens, Ollie(Debra)Owens, Queen Trotman, Isiah Owens, Leavie Owens, Shirley Wheeler, Ella Owens, George Owens and Robert Owens; 24 grandchildren;54 great grandchildren; 11 great, greatgrandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services for Mrs. Owens will be held 11:00AM Saturday, June 5,2021 at Gum Spring Missionary Baptist Church, 6973 Summerton Hwy., Pinewood, SC. Rev. Gerald Richards, Pastor, presiding, Rev. Ranzy McFadden and Rev. Dr. W. T. Johnson, assisting.
The family is receiving friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, 2630 Furse Road, Summerton, SC.
