Obituary For Esther Chapman Register Butts

~ In Loving Memory of Esther Chapman Register Butts ~

Esther Bell Chapman Register Butts, aka “Chat,” was born to the late John Henry Chapman and Harriett Hardy Chapman on September 6, 1926, in Chocowinity, North Carolina.

She joined Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Quitman, Georgia, and was a faithful, dedicated member for more than 50 years until her passing.

After graduating from P.S. Jones High School in Washington, North Carolina, she attended Elizabeth City University in 1949, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education, as well as a master’s degree in education from New York University in 1952. Esther was an elementary school teacher in the Brooks County School System in Quitman, Georgia, for over 35 years. She loved being an educator, helping others, caring for others, attending club meetings associated with her interests, and spending time with family and friends.

She departed from this earthly life on June 1, 2021, to receive her eternal rest. She was preceded in death by: siblings, Janie Elizabeth Chapman Lewis, Horris Chapman, and Sweet Chapman.

Esther is survived by: her husband, L.C. Butts of Quitman, GA; a brother, John Earl Chapman of Baltimore, MD; two sisters, Doris Chapman of Chocowinity, NC, and Ethel Piver Elmore (Heyward) of Brooklyn, NY; nephews, Hubert Earl Lewis (Beverly) of North Las Vegas, NV, Ratino Lewis (Mildred) of Holly Springs, NC, and Ira Elmore (Sherise) of Queens, NY; niece, Toni Theresa Kenscoff (Joseph); great-nieces and nephews, Angelica, Emmanuel Jacob Kenscoff, Cedric Lewis of Tallahassee, FL, Anna Lewis of Holly Springs, NC, and Keren Elmore of Queens, NY; and a host of other relatives, church mates, and friends who loved her deeply.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 10AM at Beulah M.B. Church. With respect for the COVID-19 pandemic, limited seating will be available. Burial will follow in Hill Crest Memorial Gardens. Visit this website on Saturday to view a livestream of the celebration.
