Mrs. Lessie Odell (Burt ) Terry was born September 10, 1921 to the late George Washington Burt and the late Ada Nash Jamison Burt in Attala County, MS. She passed on Friday, June 4, 2021, surrounded by her family.
Two sons, George Ralph Hunt and Sam Hunt, Jr. preceded her. She was the last surviving sibling of a large family, with nine sisters and eleven brothers: Sarah Burt Calloway, Maggie Burt Watson, Mattie Burt, Mary Burt McDade Coleman, Bessie Burt Dodd Wingard, Georgia Mae Burt Knight, Velma Dean Burt Dennie, Ruby Jane Burt Ford, and Thelma Jamison Holmes. Frank Burt, Jessie (Joe) Burt, James (Red) Burt, Ples (Shab) Burt, Henry (Buddy) Burt, Nathan Burt, Charlie Burt, Dock Burt, Leon Burt, Houston Jamison, and Solomon Jamison.
Mrs. Terry was married to Sam W. Hunt, Sr. initially. She later married Deacon Percy Terry. Both spouses preceded her. Mrs. Terry gave her life to Christ at an early age by joining Palestine M.B. Church. Later, she moved her membership to Christian Liberty M.B. Church in Kosciusko. She was a faithful member, Sunday school teacher and active participant in church functions, until her failing health.
After receiving her early education at Attala County Training School, Mrs. Terry moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to complete her high school education. She graduated with top honors at an early age. Upon her return to Kosciusko, she taught in Attala County, when a minimum high school diploma was acceptable. She continued her education with studies at Rust College, Jackson State College and Tougaloo College. She graduated from Tougaloo College, with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She taught first grade at Tipton Street Elementary School for many years, before transferring to the Holmes County School System. Upon retirement from public school teaching, she started and operated a day care center in Kosciusko. She operated her facility successfully for over 20 years. She was the first teacher of many students who went on to productive adult lives and careers.
Mrs. Terry leaves to cherish her memory one daughter and two sons: Linda Hunt of Kosciusko, James Tyrone (Verna) Hunt of Kosciusko and Charles Ray (Ruth) Hunt of Norfolk, Virginia, one sister-in-law, Rose Mary (Hunt) Sanders, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces nephews, cousins, and friends.
