Obituary For Julia Glover

UPCOMING SERVICE Visitation Jun, 30 2021 3:00p.m. - 5:00p.m. W.H. Mays Mortuary

Julia Jackson Glover was born June14, 1923 in Slocomb, Alabama to the late Exer and Ollie Evert Jackson, Sr. She was the eldest of three siblings, Alma Jackson and Ollie Jackson, Jr. who preceded her in death. She was also the oldest living family member of former slaves.

Julia graduated from Geneva County Training Slocomb, Ala and entered Alabama A&M College Huntsville, Ala. She later transferred to Tuskegee Institute and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelors in Home Economics. She later received a Master’s degree in Family and Community Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, 1960.

She met and married the love of her life, the late William B. Glover in April 25, 1947. (Tuskegee Institute 1948 graduate) They had 2 sons Alphonso J. Glover, (Tuskegee Institute 1972), who preceded her in death in 2020, and Dr. Benjamin L. Glover, Peachtree City, Georgia and a niece, Marie Richardson, whom Julia raised as a daughter from age 18 months, and inspired and prepared her for a “Road Less Traveled”.

Julia was dedicated to the historic mission of Tuskegee University and was a founding member along with husband William of the Augusta Tuskegee Alumni Club, Augusta, GA. Together they attended regional and national Tuskegee Alumni meetings throughout the US.

Julia retired from teaching Home Economics from the Richmond County Public School System, Augusta, GA, in 1984, where she proudly shared her love, care and passion for excellence and innovative with students and educators at Lucy C Laney High School and Rupert Langford Middle School. After retirement she was elected to the Richmond County School Board of Education. She became an advocate for minority elementary school males who were placed in special education or forced to repeat grade levels due to systemic racism in underperforming Richmond County elementary schools.

Julia enjoyed traveling to visit her children who resided in various parts of the USA. Her love of travel began during her summer studies at Columbia University, in New York, listening to classmates’ travel stories and her travel quest was moved into high gear. She was inspired by those who had visited more than 40 states. Her personal goal was to travel and visit all 50 states. In 2006, she relocated to Atlanta, GA to live with her niece Marie whom she raised as a daughter from age 18 months. She began her extensive travels accompanying Marie to national and international Library and book fairs, scuba dive trips, and national and international half marathon races.

Her travel portfolio with Marie included destinations in all 50 USA states, Canada, South America, Europe, and various Caribbean Nations.

She loved the traditional form of hand quilting using needle and thread and was an active participant with the Shiloh Community Center weekly quit meetings, Augusta, GA. She held membership with the ‘Brown Sugar Stitchers”, Atlanta, GA, and created and donated quilts for foster and at risk children at the Carrie Steele Pitts Home- Atlanta, Ga. She also created the Augusta Alumnae Delta Sigma Theta 1978 Chapter members Quilt on exhibit in the Delta room at the Laney Museum.

Julia and her husband were members of the Pioneers of the Belair Hill Association Augusta, GA. They built the first home in that community which was financed by the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company an African-American company, a milestone, as during that time of segregation and redlining, commercial banks in Augusta, GA., or elsewhere in the US, did not provide loans of any kind to people of color to build homes. Their home at 1610 Hilda Ave, Augusta, GA, established the model format or prototype for landscape and building designs that are current in that community today. Julia today has a New Assignment in a heavenly place of peace where there is no pain or sorrow. There she will join her husband, son Alphonso and others she knew and loved, and sit at the right hand of “Our Father who art in Heaven”. Our tears are transformed into beautiful memories and moments of wisdom and laughter with a wonderful, caring, and selfless friend, mother, grandmother, cousin or aunt and so much more. Others left to acknowledge and celebrate special personal memories are, daughters-in-law Jeanie Patrick, Claudette Glover, granddaughter Andrea M. Glover-Herry (Clarence), great-granddaughter Isabel Eva Herry, and numerous cousins, extended family and friends.
