Obituary For Joanne Thurmond

REFLECTIONS OF LIFE Sis. Joanne Thurmond was born June 6, 1941 in Greene County, Georgia to the late Willie Joe Johnson & Christine Mapp Johnson. She attended the public school system in Taliaferro County and the Fulton County School system.

Joanne was united in holy matrimony to Grover E. Thurmond and to this union, four boys were born.

At an early age, she united with the Mt. Olive Baptiat Church in Crawfordsville, Georgia. She remained there until moving to Atlanta where she united with Christ Center Tabernacle. In later years, she united with the Mt. Welcome Missionary Baptist Church, serving under the leadership of Pastor, Rev. Charles W. Grant. She was a faithful member of the Ushers' Ministry until her health began to fail.

Joanne affectionately also called "Jo", "Biddy", and "Gal" was known for her vivacious spirit, her love for children and her cooking skills. She was known by many for her "fried chicken and collard greens" and she cooked with skill that the food would just melt in your mouth.

Though Joanne had a lengthy illness, she wore a big smile and kept a positive spirit about life. On Monday, July 21, 2008 the death angel came and bore the spirit of "Jo" away to a land that is free from sickness, sorrow, pain and death.

Joanne leaves to mourn her passing a husband, Grover E. Thurmond, four sons: Seixas Grove Thurmond, Efrem Muruno Thurmond, Tyler Deandre' Thurmond, Ricardo Cornelius Hurston, all of metro Atlanta. One granddaughter, Zoya Jo Vanni Higgins and one grandson, Jacorrian Deandre' Ferguson. Two sisters, Betty Jones, Clarkston and Pat Johnson, Lithonia. A devoted cousin, Kulah Hayes, Washington, DC. One uncle, Minister Sam Royalston, Decatur and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
