Obituary For Burney Walker

Mr. Burney Walker departed this life December 8, 2007 at the age of 93. He was born June 6, 1914 to the late Lindsey and Irene Walker in Temple, Georgia.He had nine siblings, George, Tary, Clifford, Willie, Guye, Casper, Garfield, Barfield and William who all preceded him in death.

Burney was educated in Carroll County schools. He attended State Teachers and Agricultural College in Forsyth, GA and taught History, Mathematics and Physical Education in Monticello, GA until he joined the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked in Atlanta until his retirement. His favorite past times were gardening, fishing and cooking.

Burney joined Central United Methodist Church in 1945 and served in the Cathedral Choir. He attended church faithfully until his health began to decline.

He entered holy matrimony with Corene Bailey June 5, 1946 and resided in Atlanta. She preceded him in death in 1986. To this union no children were born, however, Burney and Corene were loving and supportive God-parents.

Burney leaves to cherish his memory, God-daughter, Margo Ricks Browning; son-in-law, Michael Browning and Monica Browning. He also leaves one niece, Dorothy Ann (Jan) Mullins, and a host of other relatives and many, many, friends.
