Obituary For Mrs. Tommie Tolbert Glass

“God’s garden had a need for a flower. It had grown for a time here below, but in tender love, He took it above in a lovelier garden to grow.”

Each of us has an appointment with death and on Thursday morning, November 20, 2008 Mrs. Tommie Mae Tolbert Glass kept that appointment after a brief illness. She was born February 16, 1921 in Fairburn, Georgia to the late Burton and Mary Weaver Tolbert. She was number eight of eight children. At an early age she united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Fairburn, Georgia. She attended the Fairburn, Georgia Public School. She transferred to Booker T. Washington High School, in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High school, Mrs. Glass married Mr. Thomas A. Glass on September, 1946. To this union one daughter was born, Penelope Elizabeth.

Mrs. Glass was active both in Civil and Political organizations including Metro Atlanta Republican Women’s Organization Civil and working at the poles.

After moving to Atlanta, Georgia Mrs. Glass joined Central United Methodist Church at an early age. Mrs. Glass was involved in Central United Methodist Church and the community. She was a devoted member of The United Methodist Women, Church Women United of Atlanta (where she received the certificate of Vibrant Woman), Food Pantry Ministry worker for a number of Years, Kitchen Ministry, Member of Visitation Ministry, Worked with AIDS Common Ground Ministry, The Women’s Bible Class, diligent Sunday School Member, ROSA Senior Adult Ministry, and Disciple Bible Study Participant. Mrs. Glass leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Penelope Elizabeth Glass of Atlanta, Ga.; nieces and nephews , Mrs. Billie Ann Edmondson of New York, N.Y. Ms. JoAnn Allen Tolbert of New York, N.Y., Mrs. Helen Pippins and son Lucious of New York, N.Y. Mrs. Mary Adilade Williams of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Yolanda Williams Conway of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Gwendolyn Dunnaville Page and daughter, Mrs. Wynetta McNeill and son, Mr. Theodore Dunnaville of Atlanta, Ga. Mr. James Sykes of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Yvonne Elder of Fairburn, Ga. Mrs. Pamelia Hines of East Point, Ga. Mr. Howard Pharr of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Patricia Page of Atlanta, Ga. Rico Page of Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Ollie Weaver Waters of Riverdale, Ga.
