Mr. Rufus Grant, Jr., passed July 5, 2012 in Orange, N.J.

The Celebration of Life for Mr. Rufus Grant, Jr. will be Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Saint Philip AME Church, 240 Candler Rd., Atlanta, GA with interment following Peachtree Memorial Park, Norcross, GA.

Rufus Grant, Jr. was born in Cairo, GA on October 10, 1937 to Rufus, Sr. and Tennie Grant. He departed this life on July 5, 2012 at the Gates Manor Nursing Home in Montclair, New Jersey after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Rufus attended school in south Georgia and was the salutatorian of the class of 1955 at Liberty High School in Beachton, GA. He had an academic and a music scholarship to Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. He earned a Master of Science degree from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial University in Nashville, TN. Following his graduation, he began his career as a Professor Biological Sciences at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His professional life included Administrative Assistant to the President of the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey. Then, Rufus founded Detrech Enterprises after leaving his position at UMDNJ. He also served as Deputy of the Passaic Conference for Economic Opportunity in Passaic, New Jersey. He retired from North American Technological Services (NATS). Rufus had memberships and affiliations with the Board of Trustees Foundation (emeritus) at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey and Real Estate Boards of Newark, Irvington and Hillside, New Jersey. He received many professional certificates during his long career. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Christ Episcopal Church, Bloomfield, New Jersey. Rufus was preceded in death by his parents and by sisters, Jane Magette (Richard) and Thelma Grant of Cairo. Those who now cherish his memory include his beloved sister, Doris Perry (Julius) of Roswell, GA; nieces, Gwen Anderson, Willingboro, NJ; Tonya, Boon, Clinton, NJ; and Traci Lockett (Andrew), Marietta, GA; nephew, Julius A. Perry, Morrow, GA’ three great-newphews; one great-niece; dear friend, Nadine Barlow Welchel, Atlanta, GA; three aunts, other relatives and friends.
