Obituary For Sybil Daphne Richardson

Sybil Daphne Richardson, the fifth child of the late James and Amy Chung was born on November 9, 1926 in Belair, Guyana. She was predeceased by her brothers Sydney, Kenneth and Jabez and her sister Edwina. Sybil and her siblings received their education at Standard High School.

She came to know the meaning of hard work at a tender age when she secured her first job as a teacher at St. Sidwell's Anglican School in Georgetown at the age 17. But Sybil had a passion for nursing and so it was that at the age of 20 in 1946, she joined the nursing staff at the public Hospital in Georgetown where she continued to work as a nurse and midwife for 16 years. This was the beginning of a long and successful career. During those years, she met and married Alan Frank and in 1954 gave birth to her only child, Colin.

In 1962, she emigrated to the U.S. where she continued her nursing career first at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn later transferring to Brooklyn Jewish Hospital (now Interfaith Hospital) where she became Supervisor of the Intensive Care Unit and later became the Coordinator. She married the love of her life, Bertram Oswald (Sonny) Richardson in 1965. In 1991 after 45 years of devoted care to the ailing, she retired from Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and moved to Decatur, Georgia. She became a member of Holy Cross Anglican Church where she volunteered at Holy Cross Friendship Center working with the elderly. She was also actively involved in the Young at Heart Club and the Guyana Association of Georgia until illness prevented her active participation.

Sybil was a devoted mother and wife who loved life and family. She and her husband Sonny shared a loving and endearing relationship spanning 43 years. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. To know Sybil was to love her but God loved her best. He put his arms around her and gently called her home to rest.

Sybil was called home to rest on April 22, 2008 and leaves to cherish her memory husband Sonny, son Colin, stepson Betram Junior and wife Ruth, sisters Elsie and Anetta, sisters-in-law Esme and Cora, a grandson and grand-daughter Lacey, neices, nephews, godchildren, caregiver Maple David and numerous relatives and friends here and a broad. We will miss you very much.
