Obituary For Mrs. Gloria LaVerne Morris

A Celebration of the Life of Gloria R. Morris will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. Philip A.M.E. Church, 240 Candler Rd., S.E. The Rev. George Moore, senior pastor; the Rev. Larry D. Jones, assistant pastor, officiant and eulogist. The body will be placed in-state two hours before the service – during which her Omega Omega rites will be directed by the Decatur Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at 10:00. An outstanding educator and administrator, Gloria Robinson Morris earned degrees from Bishop College and Our Lady of the Lake College in her native state of Texas. She was passionately dedicated to teaching children. Her remarkable professional accomplishments included serving as the first African-American principal in the Spokane, WA school system. Gloria R. Morris had a broad range of civic interests and served in numerous leadership capacities in the Order of the Eastern Star and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was faithfully involved in the worship and other ministries of St. Philip A.M.E. Church. Those who cherish her memory include: her loving husband, Billy V. Morris, Sr.; sons, Billy Morris, Jr. and Vernon R. Morris (Robbin); daughters, Cynthia Morris and Bobbi Morris Garlington (Ronald); eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; other relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Her body will be forwarded to Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home for committal and interment at Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City, Kansas. No visitation or viewing at the funeral home, Viewing only during the in-state period Saturday morning at the church.
