Obituary For Mrs. Josephine E. Holloway

Mrs. Josephine E. Holloway entered peacefully into rest on Monday, June 28, 2021, at her residence in Augusta, Georgia.

Josephine E. Alford Castion Holloway was born May 3, 1924, in Southern Pines, North Carolina to the late Beechmond and Louise Gregg Alford.

Mrs. Holloway attended school in both Southern Pines and Portsmouth, Virginia. She moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 1946 and became a faithful member of Hill Street Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and was a member of the Senior Choir, Usher Ministry, Freeman Koon Missionary, East Circle, and Keenagers. In 2004, she moved to Augusta, Georgia and joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Freddie P. Jackson Sunday School class, Welcome Ministry, Widow Ministry, and Retiree Ministry.

Mrs. Josephine was known to be a hard and steady worker most of her adult life. She was a sharp dresser and enjoyed shopping and putting outfits together for church and special events. She worked for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company as an agent for eight years and for Belk Department Store, where she retired. After retirement, she worked for the foster grandparent program, became a substitute teacher at Asheville Pre-School and the Asheville Day Nursery, and became a senior companion at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. At the age of 80, Mrs. Holloway graduated with the second highest average in her class from the Tender Care Training School as a certified nurses’ assistant.

Mrs. Holloway was preceded in death by her son, Staff Sgt. Ulysses Alford, husband, John M. Holloway, brothers— William Henry Alford and Lawrence M. Alford, grandson, Ulysses Alford, Jr., and a very special cousin, Mrs. Jacqueline Hamlet.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her niece, Cynthia Alford of Clarkton, North Carolina; a very devoted daughter-in-law, Yvonne L. Alford of Augusta, Georgia; and another very special cousin— Mrs. Ann Duquesnay of New York, New York. Mrs. Holloway is also survived by her grandchildren– Ulycia Frazier, Urban L. Alford, and Uneé S. Abrams (Curtis) all of Augusta, Georgia; Uvanney J. Alford (Alethea) of Gainesville, Virginia; and Wesley L. White (Sheena) of Brooklyn, New York; eight great grandchildren; one great grandchild; stepchildren— Johnsie Brome. Carol Uche, and George Holloway (Deborah), all of Asheville, North Carolina; extended family and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. on the grounds of Tabernacle Baptist Church located in Augusta, Georgia; COVID-19 guidelines will be observed. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, North Carolina. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Kindred Hospice Care, 3508 Professional Circle, Suite A, Augusta, Georgia 30909.
