Mr. Ernest M, Grindley
02/16/1930 - 07/29/2011
Ernest was born in St.Elizabeth, Jamaica on February 16, 1930. As a young man, he went to Kingston to live and after some years migrated to England where he met his wife Enid and they had four children - Quinton, Lenworth (Wade), Michelle and Andrew(now deceased). When the Nuneaton Caribbean friendly Association was formed in 1974,it started with a group of willing people and Ernest was one of those willing to get behind the idea of forming a structured group that would help nurture the cultural, social and educational needs of the Caribbean people living in Nuneaton at the time. He served on the Committee for many years and held every position including being a long running Chairperson. As an active member, he was instumental in keeping the group together through his dynamic nature and bubbly personality. He gained the respect of the community as one who was always ready to give a helping hand in anyway that he could. His popularity was such that his friends affectionately knew him as "Cowboy". His strength lay in being one who was very good at organising and supporting others in their roles in order to make things run sucessfully, whether it was organising a day trip, a dance or planning a children's party. In the words of his good friend, Mr. Ronald Hornsby: "He was a man of all - seasons, one who was for everybody and it was never too much for him to do anything for anyone. He was just good to everyone around him. when the NCFA was first set up, he was the one railed around to assist with the first dance that was the beginning of many such dances, with people coming from near and far to attend" The legacy that Ernest has left in Nuneaton is a very warming one as the group continues to grow even through its ups and down, it is still going strong, with work that has been continued through both his children, Michelle and Wade who have both served actively on the Committee and also as Chairperson, respectively. He was the one who put the "friendly" into the Nuneaton friendly Association and he will always be remembered for the part that he played in helping the group to be where it is today. Ernest was very much missed when he left England's shores to start a new life in America. In 1982 he migrated to the USA and in 1983 came to Atlanta to reside. He was an active member of various groups e.g. The Jamaica Atlanta Assiciation and the Men's Club at Holy Cross Episcopal Church. He was also a chorister at the Church. He would make concerted efforts to attens all meetings and occasions, especially if they were fund- raisers. Ernest was very dignified and a "people person" who was well respected by all . He could be very witty at times and his famous words were " One Love" and would refer to his female friends as " Miss World" Music was a part of him - he loved life and lifed it to the fullest until he was stricken by his illness. He will be a tremendous loss to all who know him. His family and friends were extremly happy when he visited them in England in April of this year - this, being his last visit- and as he leaves the shores again he will be sadly missed. Apart from his immediate family,he leaves behind grand children Marcus, Carys, Joshua, Khia, Kyrina and Naarah; sisters, Yunlyn, Olive, Amoylyn, Nukelyn, Beverly and Patricia and numerous neices, nephews, aunts cousins, and in-laws.
