Obituary For Ms.Lillie M. English

Lillie M. English (affectionately known as Aunt Lit), a native of Camden, South Carolina entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 while a resident of Sunrise Senior Living Center in Decatur, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Nehemiah and Maggie Mickle English, the third of seven siblings.

After graduating from Jackson High School in Camden, Aunt Lil relocated to Hackensack, New Jersey. She became a member of Varick Memoria l AME Zion Church where she became a class leader and, eventually, Vice President of the Senior Usher Board.

Aunt Lil enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1949 through 1952 and served in Yokohama, Japan. As a Korean War Veteran, she received several military awards and medals, including the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Aunt Lil retired from the North Jersey Developmental Center after 35 years as a senior computer operator. She was a very active member of the American Legion, Henry Douglas Post 58. She held many offices including Chaplain and Post Commander an d was also a member of the Auxiliary Unit of Post 58.

Aunt Lilloved children as much as she loved the American Legion . Sh e served as Children and Youth Chairman for both the County and Post 58 where she arranged and participated in many parties and activities for the children of the commun ity as well as those from different orphan homes. She was mild mannered with children, but could be a force to reckon with if she felt that she or others were being mistreated.

In 2008, Aunt Lil relocated to Clairmont Oaks in Decatur, Georgia. When she later entered Bentley Square Assisted Living, the first thing she noticed was that no one sat on the porch to enjoy the fresh air! Before long, Aunt Lil had two or three residents accompanying her daily on that porch. Her other activities included taking a short walk on the tree lined grounds, read her Legionnaire Magazines, work crossword puzzles as well as completing picture puzzles suitable for framing.

She loved country music and quickly became the Bingo and Checker Queen of the Center. She enjoyed talking with everyone and she was a joy to converse with.

Children loved Aunt Lila much as she loved them. She was such a vibrant woman, always the "favorite" fun loving Aunt, ready to entertain the kids by playing cards, checkers, bingo and other games, taking you to amusement and city parks and even to family reunions out of state. One thing for sure, Aunt Lil would always have her cherished "Brownie Camera" which created many memories for her nieces and nephews for years to come. Aunt Lil was indeed a phenomenal woman an.d a blessing to us all.

Those left to cherish her fond memories are her loving brother and sister-in-law, William and Lois English; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
