On February 12, 1957, in Talladega, Alabama, Hugh Oliver Ragland and Mildred Jean Carter Ragland welcomed a daughter, Nellie Ruth Ragland McGhee.

Mrs. McGhee was a Christian by faith and was a dedicated member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. During her Christian walk, Nellie served as president of the Deaconess and was a Sunday school teacher. Nellie was a graduate of Lincoln High School and continued her education at Gadsden State Community College. She had worked as an agent with Protective Insurance and was employed at Anniston Army Depot until her health began to fail.

On June 28, 1980, Nellie’s hand was taken in holy matrimony by Jottie B. McGhee and this union was blessed with two children. She, along with her husband, were strong supporters of their children and made sure they excelled in whatever they chose to do whether it be in education, sports or in life. Nellie held the position of Girl Scout troop leader, she was a team mom for sports activities, did whatever she could to ensure that her girls were successful and also supportive of their friends and classmates. She loved sports and enjoyed spending time with her family.

The Lord came to Mrs. McGhee on July 17, 2021, and gave her rest while she was a patient at St. Vincent’s East. She was preceded on the road to eternity by her parents, Hugh and Mildred Ragland; and one brother, Jabe Edward Ragland.

Nellie leaves to celebrate her life: her loving and dedicated husband of 41 years, Jottie B. McGhee of Talladega, Alabama; two daughters, LaQuita McGhee Bell of Huntsville, Alabama and Wendy (Bobby) Maultsby of Tampa, Florida; three grandchildren, Ezekiel Bell, Ayania Maultsby and Ashton Maultsby; one sister, Margaret (James) Barclay of Talladega, Alabama; one brother, Hugh O. (Frances) Ragland, Jr. of Talladega, Alabama; her caregiver, Ann Virges of Talladega, Alabama; her oldest cousin, Bobbie Jean (Willie) Gray of Birmingham, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
