JUST FINDING OUT ... Dave's mom was my kindergarten teacher in Liberty Park ... one day when Dave dropped by after school, he'd apparently done something to be punished, so his mother made him take a nap with us tiny people. He was nine years older so I guess middle school age. He was a cutie pie and later would date the daughter Mikki (Clara) of the McCaleb's, friends of my parents from St. Augustine College. AND, the couple's best friend couple were St. Aug connected, too ... Tommy Newby and Barbara Wimbish, who were also high school sweethearts and married later. We attended Grace Episcopal Church, where his father was a choir member and had a marvelous bass voice. Many years later when I became a singer, I always hoped that someday Dave and I could perform together ... but, alas, we lived in different cities. I am happy that I knew him and am in touch with Mikki. Once again I am reminded that just one little day trip would have been nice in the past few years! Sincere condolences! Becky Perry Livas

I was devastated when I heard the news of Mr. Hoggard's passing. He was easily my most influential High School teacher. I was a percussionist in one of his last bands at Lee-Davis, Class of 81. It is because of him that I went into band directing and retired after 30 years teaching band. He instilled a love of music and especially drumming in me that is still as strong today as it was in 8th grade when I went to my 1st sectional wanting to play tenor drum in the marching band. Later in HS I heard him and one of his friends playing jazz vibes and piano and I was hooked. I was never very good on vibes but he helped me to progress on drum set. We lost another beloved band director this week in NC. I was asked to play drum set at his funeral. We had rehearsal tonight (Tuesday before Mr Hoggard's funeral) and we were playing a Dixieland arrangement of WhenThe Saints Go Marching In. About halfway through the biggest smile came across my face as I could hear him say "Don't rush Blair" as he did so many times in stage band back in Mechanicsville. My condolences to the family and please take comfort in the fact that he touched so many lives and he still lives in us. God Bless.

Dave, was a true gentleman in every respect. When he was a percussionist for the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra he share stories about his past performances with many famous musicians. When I visited him at his home, I even got to see à film of him performing at the Newport Jazz Festival. His vitae showed a man of great intellect and personal compassion for his fellow man. Dave was a caring and sharing God-loving person who would give you anything that he could if he noticed à need.. He never had a negative word for anyone. That is why he was so loved by so many. He will be truly missed.

Mr. Hoggard was many, many things in my life. First, was a second father "Pop" because he and his wife treated me like I was there son as well all my life as a musician. Second, he signed Certificate when participated in all city and all state band in my High School years. Third, he had so much patience fixing all of horns with perfection. Fourth, performing with Pops was a high point in my life because I get to see Mr. Hoggard in action up close for years and he was indeed a cat that could seriously swing and hit hard the entire gig! I love you Mr. Hoggard. I will have your legacy to live through my musical journey forever!

- na

So, so Sorry to find out about David Hoggatd's passing. Dave Hoggard and his Band Class, 2 years at Stonewall and 1 year at Lee-Davis Greatly helped me get through Junior & High School.... I looked up to Mr. Hoggard. He was a wonderful teacher. I've been putting things off that I should have done. For a about a year or more I've been wanting to find Mr. Hoggard and his quartet to hear them play and to tell him personally how much he meant to me and how his band class got me through the rough years of school. I can only do it through prayer now. Dave Hoggard.... I love ya!! GOD Bless your family as they struggle with the loss of their husband, father, brother, bandmate and all who knew and were touched by one beautiful, musically talented, selfless gentleman known to all as Dave or Mr. Hoggard.
