Ms. Latham was a member of the village that contributed to my growth and maturation through childhood into an adult. I have lasting memories of the many spend the night parties in Virginia Circle to the Central Highschool band trips that Ms. Latham and my mom would tag along and chaperone. Ms. Latham was also my Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church Northport. Every Sunday she would ask me " Good morning, how are you Keshia?" I would say that I was fine and she would say " fine is hard to beat! " One Sunday I was really upset any crying and she asked me what was wrong? I told her that when I said my prayers at night that I would fall asleep. I told her I thought God was upset with me. She smiled and consoled me and told me that God was not upset with me and that it was ok. But she did share with me a suggestion, to start writing my prayers in a journal. I still write my prayers to this day. Rest in peace Ms. Latham. You are wearing your crown and wings, thy good and faithful servant. Charleeta, know that you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers and that I am just a phone call away.- Keshia Billups

My sincerest condolences to my baby Charleeta and family! Vonnie (her family nick-name) and I go back to colleagues at MLK Elementary. Her Christian roots were exemplified through her kind-heart and willingness to help others. Vonnie was very intellectually savvy; and a great writer! We often had in depth discussions from history to cooking soulful collard greens — as she was a pro at cutting them so thin! She was a great confidant, shopping buddy, & prayer partner! We were both motherless children and our promise entailed "looking out for each other's child if death comes!" Although you are an adult, Yes, Charleeta- I will check up on you!🥰 Your mom was a sweet jewel - my friend - my sista! ❤️ I loved her dearly and will cherish her in my heart!! RIH Vonnie! God speed!🙏🏼

Mrs Latham, I was not ready for this! Girl the last time I spoke with you was about a Sam's trip. I was really looking forward to having more of those, but God saw otherwise. I will miss talking to her about my first day of school. She would always ask me to tell her about my class. Well, they are cute as ever! Rest on my friend, gone but never forgotten! Love always, Irma Gore Collins

As a friend and colleague, I am smiling as I imagine Verna Latham and her school-days at the renowned Riverside High School of Northport, Alabama. Many of us inside and outside the education profession can attest to the fact that Verna was compassionate, animated, hilarious, witty, and an awesome inspiration to the young and old. For example, I remember the time I asked her to counsel one of my sixth grade students who was in the habit of acting out in my classroom. Verna conferenced with me first, then she called the student to her office. She said, Simon, don't worry about him, I know exactly what his problem is and how to fix it. What he has is called "Little Man Syndrome, and I played it well at Riverside High School. You see, when you are the shortest person in your class, you have to devise a way to rise above the rest. I was a majorette, an honor student, and the principal's number one pet student when I was at Riverside...." Well, many of you know her high school days better than I do, because you spent time with her back then. The story she told me about her tactics to overcome "Little Person Syndrome" made me laugh so hard I cried! Most of all, whatever she said to that student ended his disruptive behavior in school. So I always sent the height challenged students to Verna's office. RIP Verna Latham, you were an inspiration at Riverside High School, Westlawn Middle School of Tuscaloosa, and in sooo many other settings. We will miss you dearly! Love Always, Ruby Simon
