Obituary For Hazel James Spencer

Hazel D. James Spencer, 58, was born on May 28, 1963, in Rocky Mount, VA, the daughter of the late William E. James, Jr. and the late Pauline G. James. Hazel briefly battled Colorectal cancer until she departed her earthly journey to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 21, 2021.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William James, Sr. and Rosa James; Maternal grandparents, Earl Gilbert and Verdna (Mom Bert) Claybrooks.

Hazel was a graduate of Bassett High School, class of 1981. She went on to receive her Associates degree in Business and a certification in Phlebotomy from Danville Community College. She worked for Bassett Superior Lines, Hardee's, and PHCC, but retired from a family run business. She was married to Stafford Spencer.

Hazel is survived by her children; daughter, Candice (Davon) Miller of the home; son, Chavis Giles (Shauntae Barrera) of Martinsville, VA; step-son, Dorian Spencer (Tammy Tatum) of Martinsville, VA; sister, Sonya (Robert) Copening of Whitsett, NC; grandchildren, Cameron Miller, Carmen Miller, DaMyca Miller all of Dayton, Ohio, DeMarco Giles, Jazzmin Barrera, Micah Spencer, and Malik Spencer all of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, special cousins, and friends share in mourning the loss of Hazel.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 5, 2021 at TAD Space, 20 E. Church St., Martinsville, VA at 3 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
