SHE was a native of White Plains, GA. She was born to the late Frank Champion and Mattie Moore Champion on June 28, 1931.
AT a young age, Gracie acknowledged that Christ was the head of her life and she joined Second Baptist Church in White Plains, GA. She served Second Baptist faithfully as the President of the Usher Board until her health failed. Although she could no longer stand on the door post, she made her way to the House of the Lord as often as she could.
IN 1949 she married the Love of her Life, Mr. Johnny Hugh Lewis and instantly became a second mother to two sons. Their family was enlarged as she added eight more children to increase the total number to ten. She assisted in the raising three additional children in her home.
GRACIE was a woman who believed in education. She made sure her children first introduction to learning was at the church. Her opportunity for education was limited but she was Blessed to see her children graduate from high school and go on to receive post-secondary degrees and certifications. She was elated in 2015 when she traveled to Philadelphia, PA to see her great granddaughter graduate from Law School. She would often say "I got my own Lawyer NOW"! GRACIE believed in having her own. She worked in the Agriculture-Poultry industry for many years. She was known to provide the community with eggs and vegetables from her garden.
SHE also believed that Prayer could change things. In 1975 she received notification that her son was critically ill in Germany. Unable to reach him physically she started to Pray to a doctor who has never lost a case. Mercifully he was restored to good health and completed his tour of duty.
SHE was a Champion by Birth and a Winner through Family Unity.
SHE was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Johnny Hugh Lewis; two children, Walter Bennet, Jr and Mildred Lewis Brown; six siblings: three sisters, Gusola Champion, Gertrude Champion Howell and Josephine Champion Williams; three brothers, James, Rob and Frank Champion.
GRACIE leaves to cherish her memory eight children, Willie Hugh Lewis (Bernice) of Union Point, GA, Ocie Mae Lewis of Union City, GA, Donnie L. Hutchinson (Robert) of Riverdale, GA, Willie C. Lewis (Wonda) of Jonesboro, GA, Kenneth S. Lewis of Riverdale, GA, Retired Chief Warrant Officer-4 Alesia Lewis-Dupree of Jonesboro, GA, Gail S. Wise (Elbert) of Kingston, GA, and Rita L.
