Obituary For Ms. Annie Newton

Annie Mae Newton, affectionately known by all as “Monk”, was born December 29, 1935 to the late Delphia Newton and departed this life on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Anson Health and Rehab in Wadesboro, NC.

Annie attended the public schools of Anson County. She was employed for 20 years at White Way Cleaners and was employed at Littles Cotton Manufacturing until she retired.

Annie loved children, 6 of which she raised as her own. She loved cooking and was well known for the cakes she baked.

She confessed Christ at an early age. Annie was a member of Gatewood Station AME Zion Church where she held the post as an Usher for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Traveling Choir as well as the 3rd Sunday Gospel Choir and the Kitchen Committee.

We are grateful for the time God allowed her to be with us.

Annie was preceded in death by her mother, Delphia Newton and an uncle, Joe A. Diggs.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories a sister, Betty Moses (Larry). Six children she raised as her own: Mamie Bennett (Martin), Contrenia Hairston (Corey), Montavius McManus (Brittany), Kelley McManus, Corey Hairston Jr. and Connor Hairston. Two great great nieces, Bailee and Brielle McManus and a great great nephew, Malik McManus. Mr. G. Lewis Tillman whom she called her son and Daisy Garris whom she called her daughter. Very close family friends, Mr. and Mrs. Artis Willoughby and Mrs. Kizzie Little. A host of cousins, relatives and friends.

The Homegoing Services were held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, 2:00pm, in the Chapel of Smith's Funeral Home, 604 Salisbury Street, Wadesboro, North Carolina. Interment followed in the family plot of the Gatewood Station AME Zion Church Cemetery, Morven, North Carolina.
