Barbara was the daughter of the Late Odon and Florea Brewton. At an early age, after living in North Carolina, the family relocated to Spartanburg, South Carolina. It is there Barbara would receive her formal education. She attended school in the Spartanburg County Public School System. "Mama" also learned many lessons because she was given and taught a spiritual foundation by her family church community. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, at an early age and would continue to serve Him in her adult life.
After matriculating through school, Mrs. Nesbitt met and married the Late Clarence “Tug” Williams, and of this union five children were born: two daughters, Clarissa Williams Giles, Robin Williams Dease (William), both of Columbia and three predeceased sons, Torazes “Doc” Williams, Clarence Bernard “Nardy” Williams, and John Williams. Barbara would later meet and marry the Late Lewis Nesbitt.
Mrs. Nesbitt was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She utilized her voice and sang in the Senior Choir. She also served as a member of the Senior Missionary Society and The Thompson Street Sympathy Club.
Those left to cherish fond memories include: her sisters, Dorothy “Toot” Brewton Nanton (Ezra) of Rahway, NJ and Dorothy Fuller Lyles (reared in the home); and her childhood friend, Marilyn Tyus; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by: her two brothers; James“Jimmy” Brewton, Willie “Bill “Brewton; and one grandson; Lesile R. Giles, Jr.
A Celebration of the Life of Barbara Nesbitt will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 12:00 noon at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 502 S. Daniel Morgan Ave., Spartanburg, SC. Burial will be held in the Heritage Memorial Gardens, 3901 S. Church St., Roebuck, SC.
