David graduated from T. Wingate Andrews High School, then attended Guilford Technical Institute for a Fine Arts degree. David enlisted in the United States Army, serving as an MP. After a medical discharge, he began his career with the U. S. Postal Service for 20 years until retirement.
David love to draw and always kept paper on hand for sketches. Though a runner during his youth, his later life found him walking many miles a day with the dogs, all of whom he named Smokey. David was fun-loving, and enjoyed a great time with his friends, who knew him as Moochie or EZ- like a Sunday morning. An avid sports fan, he was a loyal Cheesehead and always ready to bet on the Green Bay Packers.
A free spirit, a dreamer, and a wanderer who had many ups and downs throughout his journey, David loved and was deeply loved by his family and friends. To know David was to know his charm, captivating personality, and his persuasive gift of gab. He never went anywhere without his winsome smile and a pair of dark aviator shades. To continue his memory, he leaves behind his mother, Creola S. Sawyers of High Point, NC; one son, Shannon L. Slade (Loureva) of Woodland Hills, CA; two daughters, Brandi M. Sawyers of San Jose, CA, and T. Sharie Sawyers of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Gertha S. Balem (Roosevelt) of High Point, NC; an uncle, James Strickland of Detroit, MI; four aunts, Rebecca Washington, Jefferlene Catchings, both of High Point, NC, Keevy Anderson of El Paso, TX, and Josephine Strickland of Mt. Airy, NC; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A special thank you to his friend, confidant, and mentor, Pastor John Mason.
