Obituary For Leatha Mae Epps Reid

Leatha Mae Epps Reid, “Sugg”, as she was affectionately called, was called from her earthly duties to her heavenly rewards on Friday, September 10, 2021 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee in Florence, South Carolina.

Leatha Mae was born February 22, 1934 in Greeleyville, South Carolina to the late James Epps and Maggie Dukes Epps. She was the oldest of eleven children. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She received her formal education in the Williamsburg County Public School System. At an early age, Leatha Mae accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Long Branch United Methodist Church where she remained a faithful and dedicated member until her passing. She served as an Usher, a member of the United Methodist Women and the YMCA. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star - Mount Hope Chapter #286. Leatha Mae was joined in holy matrimony to the late Tabby Reid in 1954. This union was blessed with ten children. One son, Ellis Jerome Reid, preceded her in death. Leatha Mae leaves to cherish her memories, her loving children: five sons: Dannie Reid, Greeleyville, SC, Carl Reid, Hopkins, SC, Jimmy (Dorinda) Reid, Phoenix, AZ, Kim (Crystal) Reid, Clemmons, NC and Odell (Keisha) Reid of Reserved, Louisiana; four daughters: Gracie (Eddie) Conyers of the home, Sophie (Marvin) Ragin, Eastover, SC. Stacie (Willie) Odume, Orlando, FL and Shelia (Jacob) Jenkins, Sr., Elgin, SC; siblings, three of whom she reared as her own, one brother, Lindburg (Alfreda) Epps, Geneva McCullough and Johnnie Mae (Maceo) Edwards all of Greeleyville, SC, Catherine Hall, Lathem, NY, Martha R. Robinson and Annie Ree (Taylor) Starks both of Greeleyville, SC. After the passing of her sister, Mary Gist, she took on the roll as mother for her six children, four preceded her in death. Those remaining are Ross Epps and Willie Gist both of Gastonia, NC, an additional niece, Cherly Singletary, Greeleyville, SC was also reared in the home; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Reid, Greeleyville, SC; a grandson reared in the home, Cleophus (Tonya) Reid; seventeen additional grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two very dear and special friends, Pearlestine Epps and Edith Hilton both of Greeleyville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing for Mrs. Reid was held from 3:00 PM til 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, SC.

Graveside services were held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Big Spring Cemetery, Greeleyville, SC. Rev. Sam Giles, officiated; Rev. Dr. Fred Moore, Presided, Rev. Annette Ragin, Rev. Laverne Brown and Elder Jerry P. Edwards, assisted.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the family did not receive friends.
