Obituary For Barbara Belcher

Barbara Belcher was born a twin (with her late sister, Bernice Mack), to the late John and Annie Mae Brassell on January 1, 1945 in Queens, New York. She leaves behind her elder sister, Susie Glover. Barbara married Earl Belcher, Jr. on September 3, 1960, and together had six children. She then attended cosmetology school where she specialized in haircare and worked at Mr. Don's Hair Salon for 20 years, as a beautician. After working at the salon for years, Barbara continued doing hair from her home for family and neighborhood friends. In 1996, Barbara made a career change, and subsequently worked as an administrative assistant for GoodTimes Entertainment, in Manhattan; before being diagnosed with lung cancer. As a 25 year lung cancer survivor, Barbara experienced many health challenges, but demonstrated toughness, resilience and most of all a sense of pride and dignity. Barbara was a Christian who believed in Jesus Christ, and relied heavily on Him for daily strength. In her senior living community, she often assisted her neighbors with small chores. Barbara was beloved by her mailman, who would personally deliver her mail to her door, as she would frequently give him, iced water, especially on those hot summer days! When it came to her children, Barbara's love was unconditional. She had a special bond with each of her daughters and sons. Always eager to help people in their time of need, Barbara generally sacrificed her own happiness for others. Barbara loved tennis and would often go to the U.S. Open in Flushing, she enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, and used her tablet to play games to pass time. She also enjoyed cooking, and made the best margarita's ever! Barbara often had requests to make her famous hot wings, macaroni & cheese and sweet potato pies from her numerous friends and family. Barbara lived a full life, and will be extremely missed by ALL! Barbara is survived by her children: John Eric Belcher, Kevin Belcher, Michelle Belcher, Craig Belcher, Karen Cureton, Debra Belcher-Gilmore: sister, Susie Glover: sons-in-law, Scott Cureton, and Dwayne Gilmore: daughter-in-law, Gail (Cleo) Brassell: 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
