Our loving Mama and Granny, Louziel Carroll Scales transitioned peacefully from this life to eternal rest Monday morning, September 27th, 2021 in Burlington, NC. Louziel Carroll was born January 27th 1926 to the late John and Sallie Carroll in Stokes County, NC. She married James Paul Scales, Sr. on April 18, 1942. They shared the same birthday and raised nine (9) children. Their life together is in the storyline of the Black experience in America, as they were share croppers working to better the lives of their lineage. Their purchase of the family farm in 1959 is the legacy that taught many generations to prime tobacco, milk cows, raise chickens, hogs and grow produce. The soulful meals that were fed to the “workers” (kids, cousins, grandkids alike) were legendary on their own. Lou loved to cook and you were never going to go hungry when you walked into her kitchen. Her homemade potato salad, pound cakes, butter and buttermilk will be missed as well. Turning down an offer to eat was unheard of as she would make you a plate anyway and you would eat, enjoying every bite. She worked outside the home as well to support the family, working at Burlington Industries and Kayser-Roth. Mama, Granny, Lou…whatever you called her…was truly loved and blessed to have lived a full life as a farmer, provider and caregiver to so many. Her legacy will live on in the loved ones she has left behind.

Louziel was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James P. Scales, Sr. and her 9 siblings. She was the last one to earn her wings of the Scales and Carroll descendants.

Those left behind to cherish her loving memory include her 9 children, James, Jr. (Joyce-deceased) of Greensboro, NC, Harvey (Barbara) of Stokesdale, NC, William (April) of Summerfield, NC, Donald (Diane) of Belews Creek, NC, Betty Fulp (Donald-deceased) of Kernersville, NC, Billy, Clarence, Bruce, all of Belews Creek, NC and Sharon Walker of Burlington NC. She loved and blessed 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren who will carry on her loving memory as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
