Obituary For Charles Green

Charles Green, Jr. was born to Charles and Clara (Runnels) Green on June 15, 1922, the second youngest of eight children. He grew up in a small town of Kerens, Texas and left for New York when he was drafted during World War II. Charles served in the United States Navy in the rank of Electrician's Mate Second Class and was honorably discharged on December 12, 1945. He met the love of his life, Gertrude Hicks in Harlem, New York and they were married on January 28, 1950. The couple settled in the Bronx where they proudly raised their son Keith. When he was not working, Charles loved the simple pleasures of life including camping, fishing, and occasional hunting, always with his beloved Gertrude by his side. Aside from being a dedicated husband and father, Charles firmly believed that serving God came first and serving one's community came second. During Charles' life he served as a proud member of Convent Avenue Baptist Church in various leadership positions including Chairman of the Deacon Board and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, he served as a member of the Manor Avenue Block Association, the President of the 43rd Precinct Community Council and the President of the Center for United Neighbors Association (CUNA), to name a few. Charles passed away peacefully at the age 99 and will be truly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his dear wife of 71 years, Gertrude; his son Keith and his granddaughter Lisandra. In his passing he joins countless loved ones including his parents, Charles and Clara; his daughters, Sharon and Gail; his daughter-in-law, Nicole; and his brothers and sisters, Pearline, George, Alice, Frank, Isaiah, Isaac, and Geraldine.
