Mrs. Bessie Mitchell, 81 of Pittsview, AL passed Sunday, October 10, 2021.

Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. EST, Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 3:30 - 5 p.m. EST.

Bessie B. Mitchell was the third of ten children born on September 4, 1940 to the late Henry and Annie Hunter. At an early age she was baptized at Zion Spring Baptist Church of Barbour County and later joined Antioch Baptist Church of Pittsview, AL where she remained a faithful member until her death. As a member she served as an Usher, Deaconess, Senior Choir, Pastor Aid Club, Youth Choir Director, “Mother” of the Church and was a member of the Eastern Star Society.

Bessie attended Glenville High School where she was an active student and a star Basketball player during her tenure. She later earned a High School Diploma from Pittsview High School. She completed sewing classes at Columbus Trade School.Throughout her career she was employed as a Domestic Worker; York Sewing Factory Seamstress for over 20 years and recently part-time with Dixie Hunting Preserve.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Annie Hunter, three sisters, Estella, Bettie Jean and Annie Maude, three brothers Johnny “Boss”, Malcom and Albert.

In June of 1958 she married Solomon Mitchell and they remained married for 57 years. They raised a happy blended family of ten children, Solomon, Jr. (Lillie Jean), Beatrice Mitchell Barnes, Maxine Mitchell Sturgis all of Ft. Myers, FL.

To their union was Curtis (Delisa) Mitchell, Alabaster, AL, Lois Kendrick, Winder, GA., Rufus (Marcella) Mitchell, Samuel (Sandra) Mitchell both of Lawrenceville, GA., Teresa Mitchell, Winder, GA., Herman (Kathleen) Mitchell, Phenix City, AL and Shameka (William) Ashbourne, Panama City, FL.; nine grandchildren, Shikeisha, Portia, Herman,Jr., Caris, Justin, Alexandria, Amanda, Naomi Rose and Johanna; two great grands, Pierre and Shiloh; sister sister, Willie Peterson, East Chicago, Ind, brothers, L.C.(Louise) and Henry Hunter, East Chicago, Ind, sisters-in-law, Jo Ann Hunter, Phenix City, AL., Annie Wright (C.L.), Merrillville, Ind. Mamie Carruth (J.C.), Cleveland, NC, Irma Mitchell Works, Columbus, GA., Katie Lee Mitchell, Phenix City, AL, Irene Mitchell, Merrillville, Ind; three brothers-in-law, Rev. Homer Mitchell, Phenix City, AL, Bragg Mitchell, Gary Ind. and Howard Mitchell, Pittsview, AL and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved and cherished.
