Obituary For Rowcenia Johnson

She transitioned from her earthly home on Tuesday; November 2, 2021, at Caromont Regional Medical Center, Gastonia.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1966. After high school, she attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, and went on to work at Clevemont Mills in Kings Mountain, NC for over 20 years and Advance Auto in Gastonia, NC for more than 8 years. After retirement Rowcenia enjoyed cooking, sewing, solving crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Purvis and Bernice Starr Jeter, three brothers, Ronald, Robert, and James Jeter, and her special cousin, Veronica Starr.

Known for her kindness, gracious smile, generosity, humor, and a ready laugh, Rowcenia, “Pee Wee” as she was lovingly known, never met a stranger; her encounters with others always elicited a smile. Ms. Rowcenia, as she was affectionately called by the children in the community, was like a mom to many in the neighborhood. She could often be seen and heard directing the activities of children as they played outside her home. Rowcenia enjoyed listening to gospel music and was a devoted member of Vestibule A.M.E. Zion Church where she served on the Missionary Department and as secretary of the Stewardess Board.

Memories of Rowcenia will be cherished by her husband of more than 50 years, Fred N. Johnson of Gastonia; three sons, Freddie Johnson, Maurice Johnson (Lakeitha), and Sheldon Johnson all of Gastonia, NC; three grandchildren, Austin Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC, Jaylen Johnson and Kaiden Johnson both of Gastonia, NC; two sisters, Laura Mood (Howard) of Gastonia, NC and Wilma J. Love of Memphis, TN, a brother, Oliver Jeter of Washington, DC, a mother-in-law Mary Frances Johnson of Kings Mountain, NC and a host of other beloved relatives and close friends, Sandra Brooks-Hoey and Melba Kimble.
