Obituary For Melvenia Smith Johnson

Melvenia Smith Johnson accepted the call of God and departed this earthly life on Saturday morning, November 6, 2021, at Alberta Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Melvenia completed her educationat Parker High School receiving her high school diploma. Melvenia later relocated to the Bronx, New York in the early 1960s. In 1969, Melvenia became employed at the A & P supermarket as a cashier in Harlem, New York. Melvenia was later promoted to a Bookkeeper for her dedication and hard work. Melvenia worked for A & P supermarket for over forty years until retirement. In the early 1980s, Melvenia joined the Rose of Sharon Chapter #10. Melvenia contributed by uplifting, elevating through love and service. Melvenia devoted her life and service to God, her family and the community, and The Prayer Temple Church family. Melvenia served as the president of the usher board for many years under the leadership of the late Apostle Joe Ross. Melvenia accepted her role and took it very seriously. If you went to the church when Melvenia was an usher you knew there was no gum chewing, talking, or eating in the sanctuary when service was going on. After retiting from her employment Melvenia spent her time caring for her family's children, neighbor children, and church family children. To everyone, she was known as "Nanny". Melvenia spoke her mind whether you wanted to hear it or not, but, it was all out of love. In addition to her parents and husband, Melvenia was proceeded in death by her two children: Robert Lamont Johnson, Carolyn Howard, aunts, uncles, other relatives, and dear friends. Melvenia leaves to remember and honor her life: her five children: Brenda Vason, Gwenessa Smith, Steven Johnson, Charles Johnson; one sister Joslyn Howard, one brother Thomas Howard, her special niece Priscilla Howard, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, several grandchildren, and great great grandchildren whom she loved dearly and her Prayer Temple Church Family.
