Obituary For Gwendolyn "Susie” Edwards

Manning, SC

Gwendolyn James Edwards, the daughter of the late William James and Florence Jenell Carter James Burgess, and the step-daughter of General Lee Burgess, departed this earthly life on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at 2:05 p.m. at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. She was born on February 22, 1958 in Davis Station, South Carolina.

“Suzy Q”, as she was affectionately called, was a 1976 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton, South Carolina. After graduation, Suzy, relocated to Brooklyn, New York, and then New Jersey. She returned home in 1996 to help care for her mother, and she worked with the South Carolina Department of Transportation until retiring. She was a lifelong member of Historic Liberty Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church, having served on the Youth Choir and Junior Usher Boards in her youth and later the Hospitality Committee.

Suzy Q was a very outgoing person, never meeting a stranger and loved by all that she met. She loved taking “selfies” with everyone. Not many people that knew her could say they don’t have a picture with her.

In addition to her parents, Suzy was preceded in death by her husband, James Bruce Edwards, II, her brother, Tyrone Hightower and step-sisters, LaVonetta Burgess and Bobbi Jean Burgess.

Suzy leaves to cherish her memories, three sons who were the love of her life, Terrence Deon James (Stephane Pugh: Aaraa James, ?? And Donovan) of Manning, SC, Barry LeCarle (Sanita?) James (Faraah Spring James), NJ and James Bruce Edwards, III (Alesia Harvin: Jasir, Taliyah, Mya) of Greenville, SC; two sisters, Glenda J. Covington and Sharon (Arnold) Madison both of Summerton, SC; one brother, Larnell (Terrie) King of Baltimore, MD; two step-brothers, Anthony (Barbara) Burgess of Dorchester, MA and Bernard (Evonne) Burgess of Manning, SC; a number of godchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edwards were held 2:22 PM Friday, November 26, 2021 at Hayes F. Samuel, Sr, Memorial Chapel, 114 North Church St. Manning, SC. Burial will followed in the Carter Cemetery, Davis Station SC.
