In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by two daughters, Sharon Shabazz and Sakeenah Abdullan; one brother, Imir Shabazz; and two sisters, Doranna Crooks Shabazz, and Debora Shabazz.
James served as Imam at the Martinsville Islamic Center. He received his Bachelor's degree in Biology/Science from Fayetteville State University. He retired from Dominion Power Co. in Chesapeake, VA after 23 years of service.
James leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Thebra Staples Shabazz of the home; three daughters, Ruqayyah Shabazz of Martinsville, VA, Sabreen Staples of Fieldale, VA, Shahidah Abdullah of Virginia Beach, VA; four sons, Amir Shabazz of Raleigh, NC, James Shabazz, III of Atlanta, GA, Yardon Shabazz of Virginia Beach, VA and Tahsean Hodge of Fieldale, VA; four sisters, Donna (Alimony) Kanu, Ashia Shabazz, Shana Ayscue (Mark Springfield), and Kabirah (Kevin) Taylor; four brothers, Raymond (Betty) McGregor Shabazz, Nathaniel (Barbara) McGregor Shabazz, Noble (Debra) McGregor Shabazz, and Aaron (Joy) Shabazz; 13 grandchildren, and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the Staples Family Cemetery, Fieldale, VA with Imam Muhammad Ali Zaghab, Officiating.
