Laura Mae was born on August 30, 1922 to the late JC and Rosie (Lamar) Cater in Weuston, Houston County, Georgia. She grew up in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia. On Thursday morning, November 18, 2021, Laura took her last breath and was ready when the angels came to escort her to eternal rest. Laura at an early age, joined Antioch Baptist Church North, Atlanta, GA. She enjoyed singing and became a member of one of the choirs. She was a member for many years. Laura attended Booker T. Washington Evening School and was immensely proud of earning her GED in 1969. Laura married Johnny Lee Childs on April 6, 1972, and being a loving wife decided to join Mt Vernon Baptist Church to attend church with him. She joined under the pastorate of Reverend S. A. Baker and was a member of the Choir for many years. She also served faithfully as an assistant teacher in the Pre-school class, and often provided private care for children. Pastor Rodney K. Turner appointed Laura to the Mother Board in 2007. Mother Childs’s employment included being a cook at a restaurant in Atlanta; being a caretaker for a senior lady; and the love of her employment was being a daycare provider at Second-Ponce De Leon Baptist Church and taking care of the babies and toddlers. She was an advocate for helping the less fortunate. In 2009 at the age of eighty-seven, Mother Childs decided to retire. Laura enjoyed attending the Day Senior Center in Decatur, Ga and she especially enjoyed the sewing and swimming activities. Laura was very thankful God had sent her a special daughter, Gleander Johnson, whom she adopted happily. Their relationship was incredibly special and Gleander and her family adopted Laura too as a Mother-in-law and grandmother and together they took care of all her needs. Mother Childs loved her church family and loved to talk with her family members who consistently called to check on her. She was always incredibly happy to be remembered by those who were able to visit. Mother Childs celebrated her 99th birthday on August 30,2021 and was so thankful that God had blessed her with longevity. Each day was very precious to her. Predeceased before Laura Mae were her parents, JC and Rosie Cater and her husband, Johnny Lee Childs, and two sisters, Charliemae Brown and Eloise Myles. Mother Childs leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted adopted daughter, Gleander Johnson; an adopted son-in law, James Johnson Sr.; an adopted grandson, James Johnson Jr., and an adopted Great grandson, Chase Johnson all of Decatur, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
