Elvin David Lang, Sr.

Mr. Elvin David Lang, Sr. passed unexpectedly on November 21, 2021. Elvin was born August 22, 1949 to the late Mr. Leon E. Lang, Sr. and Mrs. Jamie V. Hodges-Lang. Elvin was affectionately nicknamed "Pokey" by his father. He was the second of five sons. Elvin was always curious concerning life in general. If there was something to analyze, he was prepared to embark on it to find truth. After studying various religions, from a historical standpoint, he chose Jesus Christ as his personal savior and Lord. With his new found knowledge and understanding, Elvin later joined Old Ship AME Zion Church. He remained a faithful member until his demise. Elvin started his preparation for life's journey with his formal education as he matriculated through the Mobile County School System. After graduating from Williamson High School, Class of 1967, he furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelors and Master's Degree, in Biology, from Alabama State University. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1972 until 2003, of which twenty of those years were in the U.S. Army Reserves. For the state of Alabama, Elvin served as the Director of Environmental Training for E3 Solutions, Inc. (501c3-non-profit). He had extensive experience in conducting Environmental Justice Training to EPA employees, state agencies, local governments and citizens. He conducted the Fundamental of Environmental Justice Training Course in support of a Brownfield Environmental Workforce Development Job Training Program at Lawson State Community College. He served as assistant community engagement specialist for Brownfields projects for the cities of Prichard and Mobile, Alabama. He served as the assistant technical project manager for the City of Tuskegee's Brownfield Environmental Assessment Program. After 33 years, Elvin retired in 2009, as the Environmental Justice Coordinator for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). During his tenure at ADEM, Elvin served as an environmental scientist, Chief of the Source Sampling Unit and Chief of Emissions Measurement. He was responsible for programs which included; Visible Emission Certification Program, observing and evaluating emissions testing, reviewing test protocols, CEMS Audit Program, Leak Detection Audit Program, and performing emissions testing. He also enforced provisions of the 1990 Clean Air Act, conducted ambient air sampling for air toxics and served as the instructor for the Visible Emissions Certification Program. He also served as an Environmental Scientist in the Drinking Water Branch of ADEM where he inspected and wrote permits for non-community drinking water systems. He also provided assistance to water systems that were not in compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Elvin has numerous years of experience inspecting recently constructed private water wells in rural communities. As a genealogist and historian, Elvin was the Vice-President of the Black Heritage Council of the Alabama Historical Commission, Vice-President and past president of the Black Belt African American Genealogical & Historical Society, Inc. and the Central Montgomery Optimist Club. He was also a member of many other civic and professional organizations, including the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors, Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Mobile Genealogical Society, Clarke County Genealogical and Historical Society, Friends of Magnolia Cemetery, Alabama Historical Association, The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African American Culture at Alabama State University, Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance, the Alabama Bicentennial Park Advisory Committee (Name is located on the sidewalk), Freedom Rides Museum, Africatown Connections Blueway Planning Team, and Alabama Department of Archives & History and many other organizations. He also photographed several events and provided photos for the Equal Justice Initiative and the Alabama Institute for Social Justice. As if he had not done enough, he volunteered in the Archives Department at the Levi Watkins Learning Center at Alabama State University. He was an active member of the Williamson High School Alumni Association, the Alabama Asthma Coalition, additionally; he composed histories of those interred in various cemeteries in Alabama as well as other places. He had a passion for photography and was well known as an amateur photojournalist with a large array of photographs and other digital media. Elvin received many awards and personal recognition. His family and friends salute him for a job well done. He represented well, providing a rich legacy that will resonate in the hearts of many for years to come. Elvin lived life to its fullest. To cherish his memories is his loving and faithful wife, Geraldine "Geri" Wright Lang, his children, Elvin D. Lang, II (Sherrie), DeAndrea N. Lewis (Albert, Sr.), both of Montgomery AL, Tyra L. Love (Anthony), Alabaster AL, Mitzi G. Lang (Virgil King), Birmingham AL, Titilaya L. Fells (Orenn), Orlando FL, Sherita L. Flowers (Charles, Sr.), Chattanooga TN and Carey J. Pettaway; honorary daughters, Wanda Campbell and Kelly Davis, both of Montgomery AL; three brothers, Kenneth R. Lang (Rosalyn), Thomas Hines (Marjorie) and Irvin Lang all of Mobile AL; a brother-in-law, James S. Wright (Barbara), Memphis TN; a sister-in-law, Ericka Wright, Montgomery AL; three uncles, Lawrence Penn (Jessie), Union Springs AL, Joe H. Penn (Brenda) Montgomery AL and William H. Penn (Donna), Summerville SC; two aunts, Ruth P. McBride (Jerome), Montgomery AL and Dorothy Penn, Prattville AL; grandchildren, Albert J. Lewis, Jr., Danielle A. Lewis, Talea, Omere and Omari Fells, Charles Flowers, III, Christian Flowers, Joshua Lang, Canaan King, Miyel Miller, and Jaden Love; special cousins, Dr. Charles Blackledge, Yolanda Henson, Rosalind Flagg, Jacqueline Bowden, Winifred Blackledge, and Monica Lynn Battle; special friends, Lionel Woodyard, Freddie Brown, Mary Curry, Caloyn Abernathy Jones, and Edmund Moore; and a host of other loving nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, colleagues and friends. Mr. Lang was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leon E. Lang, Jr. Public visitation will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2021, from 1 to 7 p.m. at E.G. Cummings Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at 12 noon at Old Ship AME Zion Church, 483 Holcombe Street, Montgomery, Alabama, with Dr. Kathy T. McFadden officiating. Interment will be held at Alabama Heritage Cemetery with the staff of E. G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Old Ship AME Zion Church in honor of Mr. Lang.
