I truly honor the life of Mrs. Middleton, my middle school teacher. She had a quiet demeanor, but a giant love for literature. She inspired us to be better writers and to be proud of who we are and potential we have in us. I've also had the pleasure of worshiping with her and Deacon Middleton in the Old Ashley Baptist Association and always reminded her of her days at James Island Middle School. I will never forget the impact that she has made on my life. Heaven has just again an angel. May her family know that Mrs. Middleton was a treasure here on earth and her memories will forever be etched in our hearts.

To the Middleton family, please accept my deepest sympathy. Mrs. Middleton and I taught together at Burke High School. She was so smart, loved literature, and did not suffer fools! When I think of her and of what she meant to me and to other teachers, I am reminded of a passage from Othello. Othello is asked why Desdemona fell in love with him, and he said that she loved him because of the stories that he told of his life - of how he made meaning of his experiences and used them to inspire others. Desdemona heard these stories and "wished the heavens had made her such a man." Desdemona did not mean that she wanted to HAVE a man like Othello. She wanted to BE a man like Othello. This is the kind of teacher Mrs. Middleton was: she was the kind of teacher other teachers wanted to BE. She will be missed, but certainly not forgotten. Kathy Gehr

To Deacon Middleton & Family: Mae Middleton is already missed at Ferry Field Missionary Baptist Church. Mae was a judge for our scholarship essays even before becoming a member of FFMBC. I held much respect for her as an extraordinary Educator, an exemplary Lady in every sense of the word, awesome Coworker, Co-laborer in Christ & a tremendous encourager! Mae loved praising God and would praise Him if she had to praise him by herself! She was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She may be gone but she left a legacy you all can be proud of. She will always be remembered by innumerable students, colleagues and acquaintances far and near. She was escorted from earth to glory by the Grand Marshall of all times!! With much love, Vee Brown

My deepest condolences to Mr. Middleton and the children Mrs. Middleton was my favorite teacher at James Island Middle School. I still learned from her, 30+ years later. It was just a few weeks ago, you played a key role in helping my son with his college essays. There was never a time you would not lend a helping hand. You will be deeply missed. ~Melissa Barnwell

To the Middleton & Smalls Family I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Mae Frances. It was a little more than a month ago I saw her at Ashley 61. She was her usual quiet, but vibrant self. Mae Frances was always one way. I never saw her without a smile, yet serious demeanor. She had a truly warm spirit that she apparently inherited from her mom. Rest in the memories you have of her. May the Lord give you a comfort and peace that surpasses all understanding. Remember, weeping May endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Deborah Weston Grace
