Obituary For Richard Matthews

Richard Matthews of the Riverdale Community of New Bern died Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Pruitt Health Care Neuse.

Viewing hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM Thursday at Oscar's Mortuary.

His service is 1:00 PM, Friday, December 10, 2021 at Bethel M. B. Church 5390 County Line Road, Riverdale Community. The interment will follow at St. Matthews COC DOC Church. The service may be viewed on Oscar's Mortuary Facebook Page-Click on Live view.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Esther Griffin Matthews; children, Kimberly Matthews of the home; Ronald Matthews, Raleigh, Paul Matthews of the home and Velvet Matthews, New Bern; one brother, Jonathan Matthews, New Bern; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

Masks are required and social distancing followed.

I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, you was the best dad and grandfather anyone could have, I never forget all the times you was there for us, always praying for me even when I was doing wrong. You was the sweetest man, you give people the shirt off your back, I love you so much, I'm miss you everyday this pain will be forever until we meet again, trying my best to stay strong, thought you would never leave us but as least you not hurting no more. GOD please help give our family comfort, I don't know how to go on without you. We were neighbors, but we were more like family. Mr. Richard was a beautiful and kind spirit. He genuinely cared for people and was there if you needed him. We have sweet memories of seeing him pull into his driveway in the evenings after day-long work at the old Maola Milk and Ice Cream plant. We will certainly miss him.
