Deacon Charles Edward Mitchell was born on December 11, 1948 in Hardin, Kentucky to the late Cabyle and Hazel Mitchell. He departed this life on December 4m, 2021 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. Charles was the third oldest of six children.
He attended London High School in 1966, he went to Rockingham Community College to get his electrical degree. He attended Forsyth Technical Community College. and graduated with honors on Business Administration. He received his electrician's license in 1980 after which he started his own business named "Blue Baby". He was employed at Duke Power for over 25 years.
He joined Pine Hall Baptist Church in the early 70s. He became a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He served in the prison ministry. He was a member of Walnut Cove Colored School. Many years he would go out on Saturdays and witness to people about the Lord Jesus.
He served as Town Commissioner of Walnut Cove for eight years then went on to be Walnut Cove's first African-American Mayor for two years. He was a huge fan of Duke University and the Duke Blue Devils.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry Mitchell and Alfred Mitchell and sister, Virginia Brown.
Charles is survived by his wife; Geraldine Mitchell of 53 years, three sons; Charles Mitchell (DeDee), Thomas Mitchell and Ralph Mitchell all of Walnut Cove, NC, daughter; Gearl Patterson of Winston Salem, NC, sister; Pam Anthony (Milton) of Winston Salem, NC, brother; Cabyle Mitchell of Brunswick, NC, nine grand children; Leketa, Brittney (Daron), Aaron, Chris, Jasmine, Chasity, Darrious, Trazon and Simone. Five great great grandchildren, three devoted friends, Elmer Davis, Walter Flippin and Daniel Hairston and a host of nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law, other relatives, host of other family and friends.
