GERALD HOLMES, 66, was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at UPMC Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Helen Holmes-Grier. Gerald, affectionately known as “Jerry”, “Jay” or “Bank”, received his formal education in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania School District and was a 1973 graduate of Harrisburg High School, John Harris Campus. “Jerry” loved to sing and when he was in high school, he along with his cousin, the late Donald Chase, Jr. and his friend, Tony Fountain would sing songs from groups like the Moments, the Chi-lites, the Delphonics and others. In his youth, he also boxed at the old P. A. L. (Police Athletic League) building in Harrisburg. After graduating from high school, he entered the United States Army and served his country faithfully. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Harrisburg and became an employee of the Federal Government at the United States Postal Service as a Mail Carrier from where he retired. Jerry was an avid Vikings fan and would love teasing one of his nephews about his Cowboys. In his leisure, Jerry loved playing online video games with his great nephews. He loved to Karaoke, if there was a mike or a stage, he was there. He had a wonderful voice. He always called to check on his Mom and to make sure the nurses let her watch her football games. Jerry was a loving son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, father figure and friend. Gerald Holmes is survived by and leaves to cherish precious memories of him, his mother, Helen Holmes-Grier; his brothers, Napoleon K. Holmes (Kelly) of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Richard B. Terry (Michelle) of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; his sisters, Wanda E. Brooks (Henry) of Piscataway, New Jersey; Victoria Richardson of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Anita Holmes-Wilson of Steelton, Pennsylvania; his uncle, Victor E. Bair, Sr. (Barbara) of Middletown, Pennsylvania; Father Figure to Barbara Wertz and LaDonna Wertz of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Gerald Holmes’ life will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 22 at 12 Noon in the Sanctuary of New Hope Living Baptist Church at 395 S. 2nd Street, Steelton with viewing and visitation from 11:00 a.m. until Noon and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. COVID-19 Guidelines will be observed with face masks and social distancing for all attendees.
