Obituary For Flonnie Shipp

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance….

Flonnie was born, Flonnie Mae Graham on July 1, 1942 to the late Charlie Graham and Helen Cassell McCorkle in Gaston County, NC.

She was a proud graduate of the Reid High School Class of 1960 where she sang in the Glee Club. Flonnie worked at American & Efird Textiles mills in Mount Holly before finding her most rewarding work spreading joy and sharing her infectious smile with students, teachers and staff as a custodian at Mount Holly schools. Flonnie reluctantly retired after decades of work there when her health began to fail.

Flonnie was a life-long member of Shiloh AME Zion Church in Mount Holly where she served on the Usher and Missionary Boards, Communion Stewardess, church’s community soup kitchen and shared her talented alto voice with every choir. She loved singing with her brothers and sisters as well when the family traveled to area churches to participate in choir anniversaries and programs. Flonnie also loved good music of all kinds and would “cut a step or two” to her favorite Temptations, Supremes or Marvin Gaye tunes. She will be remembered most by her kindhearted loving, quick to joke spirit and a smile and laughter that will comfort us all until we see her again.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Franconia McCorkle Griffa.

Flonnie leaves to cherish her memory sister, Pamela McCorkle Buncum (Kelvin); brothers, Franklin Keith McCorkle (Michele); Douglas Norris McCorkle (Valerie); Tyrone Steele (Beverly); nephews, Thomas Griffa, Omari Buncum (Charity), Bakari Buncum; nieces, Maya McCorkle, Kelsey McCorkle, Joy McCorkle, Hayley McCorkle, Danielle Steele, and Tayjon Poteat; great-nephew, Desmond Buncum, great-niece, Leigh Buncum; brother-in-law, Clifton Griffa and a host of cousins, extended family and special friends.

All services are private but a memorial service will be held at a later date.

To the family of Ms. Flonnie Shipp. I had the privilege of knowing Ms.Flonnie when she attended the Mt. Holly Adult Day Care Center. Ms. Flonnie was a very loving and kind person. She enjoyed being around and interacting with others. She had such a humble spirit and so kind hearted. Ms. Flonnie would always make me smile when I was having a bad day. She loved talking about her family and they meant the world to her. To the family, please accept my deepest condolences during this time. I am so blessed to have known Ms. Flonnie. Take your rest, Ms. Flonnie❤️ Chenita E. Floyd
