Matthew Giles, 79, of Eden passed December 26,2021. Public viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Perry Spencer Funeral Home, Eden, NC. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 31, 2021 at Perry Spencer Memorial Chapel, Eden, NC with burial following at Giles Cemetery, Axton, VA.

Gardener, cook, and race car driver, Matthew’s life memories didn’t come to an end with his death. He was known for his love of life and racing “Shakedown” with his brothers.

Matthew “Dog” Giles passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at the age of 79 in Eden, North Carolina. He was born on July 1, 1942, to the late John Smith and Ester Moyer Giles in Henry County, Virginia.

He was married to Frances Hairston Giles and they were married for 39 years, who preceded him in death.

Matthew was a member of Jerusalem Free Deliverance, where he served on the Usher Board. He attended Carver High School in Martinsville, Virginia and retired from Equity Meats as a dedicated employee for over 26 years. Matthew was known around Eden as the “man on the scooter.” Everyone loved to see him riding through Eden on his scooter and passersby would often “toot” the horn. He was a faithful customer of the local Biscuitville, stopping by every morning for a ham or steak biscuit.

He was also preceded by his wife, Frances Hairston Giles, his daughter, Ramona Giles, and his granddaughter, Venetra Giles and his brothers, Levi and Jerry Giles

He is survived by his two sons; Tommy Matthew Giles of Eden, NC, William (Tripp) H. Moore of Myrtle Beach, SC, daughter; Fenetra Giles of Reidsville, NC. He has nine grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving siblings; Jones R. (Helen) Giles, Early (Kay Frances) Giles, Elder Waddell (Helen) Giles, Mary (Jerome) Giles, and Juanita Galloway.

Matthew will be missed by everyone that knew him and heard his unmistakable, “Hey.” His understanding nature, hardworking demeanor, and family orientation will be memories always kept in our hearts.
