Paul Mohr, Sr.

Paul B. Mohr, Sr. was born on August 19, 1931, in Waco, Texas. He was the youngest of seven children born to Charles Henry Dean and Jessica Burgette Mohr. Predeceased siblings are: Dean Sr, Jane, Jessica, Wilhelmina, Charlotte and Pauline.

After graduating from Gibbs High School with honors in St. Petersburg, Florida, Paul continued his education at Florida A&M University on a Lewis State Teaching Scholarship and earned his B.S. in Mathematics.

Additionally, he received his M. Ed. in Science at the University of New Mexico where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow. Additionally, he earned an Ed.D. in Mathematics and Higher Education at Oklahoma State University where he was also a National Science Foundation Faculty Doctoral Fellow.

Professionally, Paul had an extensive list of accomplishments, including former Director of Southern Regional Education Board Programs-Alabama Commission on Higher Education, President and Professor of Mathematics at Talladega College, Vice President and Professor of Mathematics at Norfolk State University, Dean of the College of Education & Professor of Mathematics at FAMU, Public Relations Director and Mathematics Teacher at Gibbs JC, and Junior High School Mathematics Teacher at 16th Street Junior High School at his alma mater.

Dr. Mohr has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including the Doctoral Student Organization Award, twice receiving the Gibbs Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, Freedom Fighter Medallion presented by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education, Recognition Award for his contributions to fellowships in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama, Public Service Group Achievement Award for Exceptional Service and Outstanding Leadership in Promoting Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Alabama by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Florida A&M University Millennium Award, Arizona Alliance of Black School Educators Certificate of Appreciation, Southern Regional Education Board Faculty Diversity Extra Mile Award, the FAMU Living Legend Award, and countless other awards.

Paul was initiated into the Theta Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on December 12, 1960, and was a member of the Alpha Upsilon Lambda Chapter. He was also a proud member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and served in a number of leadership positions in Phi Boulé and served as the Southeastern Regional Sire Archon.

On Monday, January 3, 2022, Dr. Mohr passed away quietly at his home in Montgomery Alabama. Paul is survived by (2) children: Dr. Paul Jr. (Lydia) and Michelle (Chris); a devoted friend: Tuckora Landrum; (9) grandchildren: Sharif, Jennifer, Christina (Sean), David (Alana), Paul (Angelica), Tia, Damien (Janine), Johnny, and Monique; (18) great-grandchildren; (2) great-great grandchildren; (4) siblings, Sean Mohr, Vincent Mohr, Jeh Mohr, and sister, Kamille Mohr as well as many loving nieces and nephews and a host of devoted family members and friends.

“ A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Bede the Venerable Parish, 3870 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Alabama 36109, on Monday, January 10th, at 11am (CST). Prior to the service, at 10:50am (CST), a tribute will be given by Dr. Mohr’s son and daughter.

For those unable to attend, the tribute and the Mass will be live- streamed and can be accessed on the St. Bede website, stbede.org. A recording of the service can also be accessed for two days after January 10th through the St. Bede website.”
