On Saturday, January 8, 2022, as silence engulfed her room, God spoke in a soft voice and said, “Mary, you told me you missed your husband and you were ready to be with Me. Come on up here Mary because I’m ready for you.” And in the twinkle of an eye, Mary Pearl Satterfield Dalton took her last breath and ascended. Her work here was done; she finished her race and proclaimed victory!

Mary Pearl, known to many as Mae Pearl or simply as Granny, was born on July 4, 1933 in Stokes County, North Carolina to Rusher Satterfield and Odessa Goolsby Satterfield. She was preceded in death by her loving parents; the love of her life, her beloved husband of 71 years, Frank D. Dalton, Sr.; and her 3 brothers, Rusher Satterfield, Jr., James S. Satterfield, and Michael O. Satterfield.

Mary Pearl had a green thumb, everything she planted thrived. Her magic didn’t just apply to plants; she loved, nourished, and supported her family, her extended family, and others. For all practical purposes, Mary Pearl was a nurse. She cared for her parents as their health failed; her brothers, Michael and Sherman, and father-in-law, John Dalton, spent some of their final days in her home so that she and her husband could care for them. Mary Pearl was a second Mom to several nieces and nephews; several of her grandchildren (they know who they are) preferred staying with Granny over their own homes!

Mary Pearl’s love for her children knew no limits. She sacrificed and went without so that they could have whatever they needed. They didn’t leave home until she was sure their tummies were full, their clothes were neat and clean, and their hair was just right. Mary Pearl loved the Lord and was a life-long member of Withers Chapel Church. She made sure that her children knew the Lord too. Sunday school and church service were weekly requirements.

Mary Pearl attended elementary school in Stokes County and high school in Rockingham County. She was a full-time homemaker until her youngest child was old enough to attend school. She then worked in textile factories in Walnut Cove and Madison, NC making lifelong friends wherever she went. Mary Pearl was also an entrepreneur, serving as the “Avon Lady” throughout the community for several years.

Mary Pearl leaves behind to cherish her memory 5 children: Anthony E. Dalton (Sandra, Deceased) of Walnut Cove, NC; Rodessa D. Mitchell (Doug, Deceased) of Kernersville, NC; Cynthia D. Robertson of Brown Summit, NC; Cassandra D. Graves (Jaffa) of Greensboro, NC; and Frank D. Dalton, Jr. of Landover, MD; and Son-In-Love, Curtis Gibson (Betty) of Walnut Cove, NC. Mary Pearl was blessed with the love of 13 Grandchildren, 27 Great-Grandchildren, and 5 Great-Great Grandchildren. Also left to mourn are 2 sisters: Loretta Smith (James) of Belews Creek, NC and Portia Satterfield of Kernersville, NC; Brothers-In-Law: Albert Dalton (Joann) of Winston-Salem, and Delbert Duckins of Toledo, OH; Sisters-In Law: Alice McNeil (Herman) of Landover Hills, MD, Betty Ruth Jackson (Ronald) of Toledo, OH, and Ida Dalton of Stokesdale, NC; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
