Mother Maggie Gaymon Durant, the daughter of the late Wallace and Marie Thompson Gaymon was born May 16, 1929 in Panola section of Clarendon County. She departed this earthly life, Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at McLeod Health Clarendon Hospital in Manning, South Carolina.
Marriage: Mother Durant was happily married to Deacon Willie Durant, Sr. for 66 years. This union through God’s blessing brought forth eight children, four boys, Willie L., Robert, Martinez and Moran, four girls, Shirley, Queen, Ruth and Audrey.
Preceded In Death: She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Willie Durant, Sr.; two daughters, Shirley Gibson and Audrey Davis; three grandchildren, Donovan Durant, Maurice Hatcher and Raven Dendy; three sisters, Catherine Oliver, Archie B. Brown and Camilla Washington; four brothers, Reverend Preston Gaymon, James Gaymon, Robert Gaymon and Reverend Rufus Gaymon.
Education: She attended Panola Elementary School and Scott’s Branch High School.
Church: In her youth, she joined Mt. Hope FBH Church, Mother Durant was a woman of excellence. She worked on many auxiliaries in the church. She served as Church Clerk for forty years, Mother’s Board, Sisters of Charity, member of the Prayer Band, President of the Senior Missionary Department for thirty-three years and she sang with the choir and was also a member of the Five Mighty Sisters for several years. Mother Durant loved working in the church and she was a person who loved her pastors and she did all that she could in supporting the ministry.
Employment: She worked at Clarendon School District One for two years and retired from Campbell Soup Company in Sumter, South Carolina after being employed for twenty-two years.
Cherish Memories: Mother Durant leaves to cherish her memories: four sons, Willie L. (Cynthia) Durant, Robert (Betty) Durant both of Pinewood, SC, Martinez (Deidre) Durant of Greenville, SC and Morgan (Renee) Durant of Rock Hill, SC; two daughters, Queen Washington of Pinewood, SC and Ruth (Frank) Jackson of Orangeburg, SC; one special granddaughter reared in the home, Alegra Hart of Louisville, TX; two adopted sons reared in the home, James (Cora) Gaymon of Montgomery, AL and Adrian Gaymon of Greenville, SC; a son-in-law, Douglas Gibson of Charleston, SC; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren; two sisters, Susie Holmes and Mary Jackson both of Newport News, VA; two sisters-in- law, Laura Gaymon of Manning, SC and Lorena Gaymon of Pineood, SC; one brother-in-law, Vernell (Thelma) Durant, Sr. of Pinewood, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Public viewing was held from 4:00PM til 6:00PM Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church Street, Manning, SC.
Funeral services were held 11:00AM Friday, January 28, 2022 at the Taw Caw Community Outreach Center, 1130 Granby Lane, Summerton, SC. Pastor Annie L. Riley, Eulogist; Rev. Dr. Susan F. Wilson, Pastor Ethel Lemon and Dr. Shirley Dozier, assisting. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Fire Baptized Holiness Church Cemetery, Pinewood, SC.
The family is received friends from 3:00PM til 7:00PM daily at her residence, 1448 Wallace Road, Pinewood, SC.
